MG MGA - gearstick gaiter

Having just finished fitting a five speed conversion into a twin cam, we find that the gaiter is pulling the car out of gear. Comparing the new gaiter tp the one on my car, it is clear that is a lot thicker, and I suspect that a thinner one would eradicate the problem. The car has the quick shift gear lever, so the stick is in exactly the original position. My own gaiter is over 25 years old, so there's no knowing where it came from without shifting through all the bills from then, and also no sure way of knowing if that supplier still uses the same source.

So does anyone have the details of who is supplying correct thin walled ones? The one now fitted came from Leacy.

I had the same issue back in 2000 with my 1800 T-9 and long throw stick - since changed to short throw like yours. I ended up making an MGB style leather gaiter. I have occasionally though about changing back to the standard gaiter now I have the short throw stick, but now not so sure since reading your issue.

Dominic..I had the same issue when I first fitted my Sierra box and replaced the gaiter with the small neat one shown. It gives no resistance to gear movement . I believe I is an mgb gaiter and that I got the recommendation off this site many moons ago. I can research if you wish to go this way.

Thanks, but we would like to use an original style gaiter if anyone can point at a thin-walled version

Dominic I had the same problem but only in 3th/5th gear I Adjusted the hole position in the top gearbox cover so it was further back. This reduced the pressure on gear lever and it has been fine since. From memory the angle of the top cover means that there is more pressure exerted on the lever when in 2nd or 4th gear. I can't remember exactly what I did but its worthy of checking the position of the gaiter relative to the lever.

Yes, i too relieved the top cover panel to give a greater gap between the stick/gaiter and the panel when in 3rd and 5th; it originally jumped out of 5th.

Again, it is only caused by the excessive thickness of the new gaiter. If I can find a thinner walled gaiter the problem can be solved without any other tweaking at all.
The gaiter on my own car is about 1/3 the thickness of this new gaiter. If necessary I can measure the thickness of the bellows and see if anyone comes close. I have no problem on my own car, and have left everything as standard.

Soooo.. .. Who has the thinner gaiters?

Hi All,

Could this little problem have been eluding me for years? Stock transmission with 1600 engine. (nevermind the supercharger) The shifter slips out of 3rd gear intermittently. I replaced the rubber long ago and it does seam fairly thick. Could it be?

I'll cut some carpet away at the top and find out. It is a tight fit

Thanks for posting this!!

Gearshift gaiters I bought from Moss Motors USA in the past few years are pretty thin. I have replaced a couple when they split at the bottom flange inside the groove that fits over the sheet metal tunnel cover. This is likely what you are looking for.

For the 1500 type gearboxes low starter and splined output shaft, slipping out of 3rd gear on overrun was addressed by the factory. See here:
