MG MGA - Generator

I have good generator output open circuit (D+F bridged)and positive electricity from a negative ground converted unit.
But the IGN light stays on when running.
Next step? Can I harm the generator if the control box malfunctions?

Well, I don't have a good feeling about my regulator box, so I think I will get a new one.
Moss P/N 142-000 seems reasonably priced. What is the experience with this, or are there better units, such as solid state technology?
Art Pearse

Hi Art,
I have only replaced the voltage regulator twice in 47 years - they have been very reliable. I have no experience with solid state regulators.

Yes the regulator can harm the dynamo and the battery. I had one that was not controlling correctly where the contacts remained closed causing a too high voltage, I had cooked a couple of dynamos and two or three batteries before I realised what was happening. The workshop manual is very good in describing how to check and adjust the original type regulator. Good luck.

You could of course fit an MGB-style alternator. I can't remember what engine you have so you might have to fabricate an elongated rear bracket to make up for the unit's shorter length. this modification would allow you to use the current regulator box purely as a convenient set of terminal posts.

Just a thought.

One of the modifications that I made , was to add a voltmeter to the dash (seen in photo, lower left of steering wheel hub)....The ignition warning lite only tells you that there may be a problem....With the gauge, you can "tweek" the regulator till you are getting the right output, and see the result....
If there's a problem, you will know ahead of time.

Good idea Ed.
Steve, I'll try the new reg. first. Motor is a 1622 Austin A60 with MGA cam and MGB head.
Art Pearse

OK Art. The 1800 has holes tapped in the block for both generator and alternator rear bracket mounts. The 1500 only has the generator holes. Not sure about the 1600 and 1622.

You can add an alternator to any MGA engine. The late type Midgets had a different rear bracket when they changed over from generators. Moss sells a good reproduction #130-115. So, the type of B series block you have is not an issue.
