MG MGA - Grille Panel - Racing
Does anyone have a template for the substitute grille panel that I have sen fitted to the front of some racing MGAs - this panel fits over the top of the grille opening and reduces the grille opening - it makes the front of the car look much more agressive. I have a picture of one that I will post tomorrow - the green MGA was seen at the MG event in Gatlinburg. This is not the valance panel for the bumper. Sorry I don't have the picture today - I will try and post it tomorrow. I hope this makes sense, Jeff |

Is this the grille that you mean? Mick ![]() |

Mick - yes exactly - that is the car I have a picture of. Perfect - I only had a side shot and not the full front photo. Was that a standard fitting for some of the racers - I like the look of that panel on the cars. Makes the A look much more sporty. I imagine I could just make one following the lines of your picture, Jeff |

Jeff, That modified grille was fitted to several MGA's raced in the late 1950's and early 1960's. The most famous were those of the Dick Jacob's racing team and that of Bob Olthoff. Bob Olthoff, a South African, was employed at the MG factory and raced car YRX 310 in the 1960's. Mick |

Jeff, I've been saving photos of modified MGAs and have several of race cars with the grill opening reducing panels you mentioned. Here's another.

I have attached a photo of the cars in the Dick Jacob's racing team. These cars raced in the late 1950's and early 1960's in England. Anyone thinking of copying these modifications should be aware of temperature differences between their weather and that in England. Mick ![]() |
