MG MGA - Happy Birthday!

Today my MG turns 55 years old (although the grille is a few years newer, but hey, I have a couple capped teeth, too).

David Breneman

Glad you clarified about the grill, I was real confused for a couple of minutes there trying to decide if it was a 1500 or Mark II.

Mine had it's 55th birthday last year, unfortunately I completely forgot her birthday. Hopefully, I'll be able to take her to a nice party this year once she gets dressed.

Congrats to your car on its 55th - just a couple of years older than mine. Here's a photo of mine, complete with party balloon, taken in May 2010 - its 50th birthday - with some of its MG friends. The 50th birthday just happened to coincide with one of our club's pub meets.

Beautiful cars, Larry and Cam!

The grille always gets puzzled looks from the MG intelligentsia. When we were restoring the car, we discovered that it had been hit in front (and, judging by the type of bodywork performed on it) some time around the mid 1960s. The Mark II grille is an original factory grille. So we surmised that whoever repaired it at the time went to the local BMC dealer, ordered an MGA grille and installed what they got. By then, that was all that was available. So rather than put on a reproduction 1500 grille (which I can always do some time in the future) we decided to keep the Mark II grille, as it appeared that this is the car that has always worn it.

FYI, in case you didn't know, all you need is the slat section to convert your grill to a 1500 one. The outer surround is the same, as well as the nose piece and the MG emblem. I'm sure you could find a willing buyer for your original slats.

Thanks, Larry, I'd heard that before. Definitely something to keep in mind for a swap.
