MG MGA - Help sorting an abandoned project

I have agreed to help a friend get his abandoned MGA project going again, and I need a bit if advice to start, and no doubt will need more later.

At the moment, I can only think of two things I would like to know.

1)Is the fuel tank likely to have a drain plug?
2)I am near Louisville, Kentucky. Who would you recommend as a parts supplier? I noticed that neither of the places I normally get my B parts from deal in the As.

I don’t know the exact year of the car, but it has the 1500 engine. At a glance it looks like it may have always been rust free. The owner was doing a partial restoration, and he removed the fenders, bumpers, windshield, and doors. He did not remove the tub from the frame. All the parts including the tub were prepped, primed, and given one coat of black lacquer to seal things up. The seats have been reupholstered, and that is about where the project stalled.

I am not doing any bodywork or body assembly work. I am only signed on to sort it mechanically. Reportedly it was last started about 5 years ago, but I suspect that could be an underestimate. The car was not mechanically disassembled, so I expect sorting it mechanically should be a pretty simple job.

He has a good shop manual for the car, but I do not have it in my possession. Work will begin on the car after he moves it from storage to a garage.

He is trying to thin his fleet, and does not intend to keep the car. So, if someone is looking for one this might be a good candidate.

Thanks,
Charley

Hey Charley,

Sounds like a 1500 (1955-1959)
Yes if its got a stock tank you have a drain plug in the bottom middle of the tank.

What kind of money are they looking for it?

If you need stock parts I have many spares for MGAs

Wow...you must be a super hero with your cape on...you just pulled prop out of the fire and you are off to help someone else!

Hello Steven,

I don't think he knows what it's worth. He bought it a long time ago. He kind of shrugged his shoulders and said maybe $9500. I don't know if that is in the ball park or not and I don't really have a fix on its condition yet.

For what I'm doing I hope I won't need the parts you have stashed because I'm kind of thinking along the line of some filters, maybe a few ignition parts, and maybe some carb kits to get it running. If it turns out to be more major, or if whoever puts the body together needs something, I will keep it in mind.

As for being a hero, he did ask me to help, but offered to pay. So, it's kind of a favor, but not a free favor.

Thanks,
Charley

Little British Car Co is a good supplier - Moss parts at 15% discount.

Thanks Art. I have heard of them, but don't think I ever ordered from them.
