MG MGA - Hood Frame

Hi
Looking to have the hood frame powder coated and just noticed poppers on outside of the vertical hood stays just above the mounting plates. Are these for fixing the hood flap that goes in side the sidescreens?
Thanks Brian

Brian

Yes. It's an easy one to forget to undo when lowering the hood, risking damage to the material.

Hi Both,
not quite sure what you mean, any chance of a picture?

Brian, I'd be bit worried about powder coating the frame because of the thickness of the coating and the fact that there are many moving surfaces on the frame very close to each other. I'd be worried that after coating the whole frame might seize up. But maybe you know someone who has done it successfully?

I guess this is the stud you mean?............Mike

I think the popper (snap) was unique to the MK-II top (beginning in mid 1600 production) with the wider canopy, longer front wood bow, and different articulation of the frame. Earlier cars didn't have that snap.

I bought my frame from Bob West when I rebuilt my car. It has the popper, so as Barney intimates it was probably from a later car.

Hi All
Thanks for comments. Went to MGA Day at Upton House. Looked at all the A's but could not find colour of hood frame. Mine seems to be greenish beige. Can anyone give me a colour reference. Just been to Brown and Gammons today to pick up parts for rebuild and ordered interior trim and seat kits. Thanks Brian

I looked into the frame colour several years ago and found some BMC paint swatches from the 1950s. The swatch that matched perfectly with paint flakes from my car's frame was Cotswold Beige. However, this didn't help much because although there was a reference number 14304 against the colour the paint supplier said he couldn't mix to this reference. At the time I saw a picture of a Rolls Royce which was painted Cotswold Beige and I thought this would be a good lead to finding the correct code but never followed it up because I wasn't intending to keep any of the original colour on the car.
In the end I used RAL1019 (see pic.) which is reasonably close.

When doing your frame don't forget to do the side screen brackets at the same time if they are the later painted variety.

The factory may have chosen the beige colour to match the tan rear side of the Everflex hood used at the time but tan doesn't seem to be backside colour of new hood materials. For example my navy blue hood back colour is grey and is not an ideal match for the tan frame............................Mike
