MG MGA - how do I get this off??

Hi guys

I'm just starting to replace the inner wing panels of my resto project A. I can't see how this bracket splits apart from the inner wing? See photo. It's attached to the inside top of the scuttle panel bracing rib and to the inner wing. I can't see any spot welds to drill out and no seam welds around the edge.

In desperation I've tried the BFI method of hammer and chisel to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Andy

That piece was originally spot welded at the factory. Try some paint remover--after which you may be able to see the welds.

Thanks James, will do. Using a wire brush in a grinder didn't reveal anything but I'll try paint stripper.

Hi Andy,

I'm sure you'll find the welds. By the way, great color!

Hi Tom,

sadly the green you see is primer applied by the PO after sandblasting. I love the colour in the picture you attached, yours I presume?

Mine was originally Glacier Blue and then painted Old English White by the PO prior to sandblasting.

My question from your pictures is why go so high. Is there a problem other than the rust shown at the bottom? The part of that panel that looks bad to me is the bottom few inches. Save as much of the original and weld in only what is needed.
The best pictures of how to repair MGA bodies that I have found are on Eclectic's web site. Go study here before you make more work for yourself than may be neccesary.
The piece you ask about is spotwelded.

Hi Andy,

Well, great primer color at least!

Yes, it is mine. Most people love or hate the color. Of course, who cares?

What color do you plan to paint yours? I had a Glacier Blue one once that was repainted BRG. I sold it before it could be restored, but I'll bet it looked nice when new.

Andy, I can see a couple of spot welds in one of the pictures.
