MG MGA - identification HELP!

Can anyone identify an old MGA serial number for me? The tag says "GHNL/79310"

thanks!
V Smith

Hi

It's a 1600

G = MG
H = engine size between 1400 and 1999cc
N = type of body - open 2-seater (D would be a Coupe)
L = left hand drive
79310 is the car identification number, showing it was built probably around October 1959

Next question -
This car from what I am told is a twin cam with knock off wheels. It is also in the begining state of rebuilding. Do you have any idea (totally ball park) what it may be worth for a re-sale value?
I am thinking of possibly selling it and am not quite sure where to start.
thanks!

The Twin Cam had its own numbering system beginning YD for a roadster and YM for a Coupe' so your ident tag is not a Twin Cam. Sounds like someone has built one car from 2.

If it is a Twin Cam (there are numerous differences quite apart from the engine) it will be worth doing research to source the correct ident tag. One of the fountains of knowledge on Twin Cams on this BBS is Mark Hester. You should contact him.

Many TC's had pushrod engines installed later on. Would still have the unique serial numbers though.

Are the wheels knock off steel wheels with a pin-drive? You might be a Deluxe, Made from leftover TC parts after the factory withdrew from TC sales. Those steel wheel knock-off's are a first giveaway.

2nd place to go might be: a Deluxe should have 4 wheel disk brakes and 2 master cylinders. Many other things too but these are quick and easy to verify.

Once this is verified, you can get a Heritage Cert. to find out oif it is a real Deluxe.

You really need to have someone who knows MGAs look at this car. If it is truly a TC or a Deluxe, it's worth quite a bit of money. But years ago a dealer tried to sell me a regular 1600 as a TC simply because it had Knock-offs!

V,
You could contact John Drake, NAMGAR Registar on registrar@namgar.com. He may have some knowledge and history on the car. Give him the car colour etc.
Peter.

Hi Virginia,

Lets start with:

Please post a photo of the right hand engine mount?

Also a photo of the oval body number tag, near the right hand bonnet hinge?

Thanks
