MG MGA - Improved MPG With New Jets

I had never been impressed with my car's mpg since the rebuild in 96/97. I always felt it ran a tadge rich and I could never lean it out to my liking. I tried many things over the years but it never made any significant difference.

The carbs were an exchange reconditioned pair in 96. I always assumed that the wearable bits had been replaced during the reconditioning. This time last year I bit the bullet and changed the only parts I had not addressed - the jets. That sorted it all out in an instant and she tuned up brilliantly. Looking at my fuel figures for the year since the new jets the mpg has improved by 4mpg on like for like local usage. I have not managed anything really long this year due to other commitments but by comparing past data I think I should get an extra 8 to 10 mpg on those types of trips.

It does make me wonder about the original jets. Were they changed by the reconditioner?

What are/were you getting Steve?
Art Pearse

When I had a 1850cc MGB engine with H4 SUs the best MPG I ever got was around 29, more usually it was somewhere between 25 and 27.

However, now I run a much more powerful 1950cc engine with a Weber 45 DCOE, the norm is around 24/5 mpg if I drive steadily with just the occasional burst of acceleration.
( I did just once achieve 28 mpg with this engine when I was following another car for over 100 miles at a steady 40 mph, it was really boring though and I am unlikely to ever repeat this achievement!)

But if I let my right foot get the better of me, then I am lucky to get more than 22 mpg.
Its great fun though!

I was getting 21 on local driving, typically around town and the odd dual carriageway. Now 25.

Long distance, say 250 miles, was around 29.

My average overall since 2006 is 23.62.

1800V engine, 5 speed, 3.9 diff.

Your mpg figures are making me feel much better about my car Steve, I forgot to say that I also have a 5-speed gearbox and a 4.3 diff.

I've been getting about 32mpg, not much in town though.

How far down from the bridge are the jets when the choke is in ?
Dominic Clancy

I will need to take the tops off to measure the distance Dominic. It's a year since and I've forgotten the figures.
