MG MGA - Indicator Switch

Indicator switch has lost the ability to stay in the L or R position and I have to hold it around most corners compromising my safety. Has anyone overcome this problem by lubricating? Or expanding the leather bellows?
It is the original switch so may be just worn out!

Barry,

Have you read Barney's article?
Note it is six pages.

I just tighten the front screw -which stiffens it up and makes it a manual switch (i.e. it holds in the left or right position until turned back) I have also fitted a warning buzzer as well as the indicator light

Easy enough fix to be done. Barney does have this covered, although it is fairly intuitive by itself.

I had an A where if you turned the switch strongly past the normal stop it would lock in position - keeping the flasher on indefinitely either left or right. If you wanted it to function normally (about 15 secs for mine) you just didn't turn it too strongly.

It would be fairly easy to modify the vee ramp height with a file so the bar drops into a groove for when you want the flasher to stay one.

Barry, simple remedy is to remove the internal spring, then the switch stays on as long as you like. I've installed a cheap "beaper" that reminds you that it is still on.

I repaired mine recently using Barney's article. Worked fine just had to try different sized card to get the right resistance and then a fine tune with the needle screw afterwards.

Thanks for the comments. I will, of course, read Barney!

i cured this problem 4 years ago by using cylicone grease that i bought from a plumbers merchant ,i was able to use the adjuster for timing and have not touched it since , try it .

wishing you all a very merry MGA christmas

That was an early article on my web site, January 1999. Now 13 years and 112,000 miles later, I should say it needed another touch of silicone grease a few months ago.
