MG MGA - Interesting new grille!

Is this the answer to overheating problems? Open area looks larger than standard grille. I like it!

looking fairly tough for a shiney car
The front's not unlike the fronts on the twinkies on Barney's site

Reminds me of this MGA!

To me the area of the grille looks to be smaller than the standard grille, but in the case of SRX 210, it was obviously large enough to cool the car for the duration of a Le Mans 24 hours race and also win its class.

The new grille cut through the valence below the radiator duct looks like they are to provide airflow for the oil cooler.

The first picture looks like a beautiful race prepared Twincam that we used to see on MGA Day here in the UK

I have had an interest in this front end for a long while including an exchange with Barney. Seemingly it was quite a common mod in the club racing MGA circles in the day. As Barney pointed out it would never been applied to factory racers as it looses the distinctive front and MG badge.

The reason for my interest was that in the mid 70s I went to see an A for sale but the guy wanted a high price as it had this front end so he thought the car had ‘history’. Then a few months later I found the same car in a Sports Car scrapyard and I bought the whole backend of the body which is still on my car, and a few months later again I got most of the front end from a guy who had bought it from the scrappy but only wanted a small bit of it. By the way Jeanne was not impressed when I brought a complete rusty backend on the roof of her modern Maxi!

I realise you ask "Is this the answer to overheating problems?" with tongue in cheek, but a few years ago I had removed my grill for access, and decided to experiment. Not surprisingly, it gave a definite reduction in the temperature,
As I had over-heating problems at the time, I bought some relatively cheap mesh and constructed a mesh grille that continued to give almost the same drop in temperature.
I liked the appearance of the mesh grille, so have kept it on the car ever since, much to the annoyance of my very conventional friend!

Did your friend get overheated about it

... I'll get my coat.
