MG MGA - Interior Door Panels

Hi
Just starting to fit door panels bought from Brown and Gammons. Having trouble lining up the hole for the door latch, seems a bit tight. First attempt the panel got stuck on the keep and I had to force the door open. The bottom of the panel is lower than the bottom of the door. Is this correct. I thought that the panel should follow the door profile. Any comments appreciated. Even a picture may help, before I ruin the panels.
Thanks
Brian Paddon

Hi Brian, I recently fabricated some door panels using the drawings and info from Barney Gaylord's web site: mgaguru.com , I found that I had to trim the plywood a little to fit the door acuretly. You are right, the panels have to follow the contour of the door frame. Good luck.

I installed door panels from another vendor and had similar issues, especially around the door lock striker and bottom of doors. I ended up securing the panel and then marked up the panel in areas which needed trimming. I then removed the panel, peeled back the vinyl, cut the excess backer and then re-glued the vinyl. Time consuming, but it worked.

I think the nut for the side screen socket has a flat that needs to be aligned otherwise it interferes with the panel.

It seems that all the templates at the trim companies have the same error, because I have retrimmed a number of cars over the last few years and the door panels have all needed ten mm removing to make them fit. They also needed adjustment around the door latch. This is regardless of the supplier, so I suspect they are all buying from the same manufacturer.

For the widescreen peg socket the panel should have a cut-out in the board, but the covering is continuous over the cut out to produce a soft edge that just covers the nut. There should be a wedge shaped piece of wood on the for that steps the panel out to make this easier to fit (see Barney's page)

Fred, interesting that you mention the nut. As it was interfering with the panel, I ground down one of the sides as much as possible without encroaching on the threaded center and it helps minimize the bulge that you see in a lot of A panels. Looks almost flat now.

You don't need to grind anything, just make sure you have the wedge piece and the cut-out in the panel and all will be fine
