MG MGA - Jobs getting bigger!!

looks like I need a new sill assembly, hopefully I can get away with a patch on the post. How do I investigate further ? shall I start to cut the internal sill out, its a bit depressing

Welcome to the world of MGA. It all depends on what your plans are for the car. Don't be depressed, we have all been there. The whole rocker panel door assembly is where most of the work is in the MGA, and as far as I am concerned it has to be repaired properly. Take the time to look for a Panel Beater that can take a look at it. They may be able to guide you better with your decision. What would take me weeks of work, they can take just a couple of hours, and the job is right. A little research now can save you $'s later.

If it requires body off, there is no way it will take a couple of hours! Inner sill repair is body off.

I would start by removing all four wings and the outer sills and assess the work required after you've got to this point. From the picture you certainly need one new inner sill.

I think I would also inspect the frame carefully possibly removing carpets and/or floorboards. If the frame is badly rusted then the decision is made - the body needs to come off. If the frame is solid then you might be able to get away with replacing the sills without removing the body, plug welding from the front face.
The amount of work required depends on your own standards. But removing the body is a big job...........................Mike

Yes, Mike is absolutely right.

New inner and outer sills plus any repairs necessary at the bottom of the A and B posts. If the rest of the car is pretty good it can all be done on the chassis and the inevitable body off restoration delayed another few years or fifty!

Mine has become a big, big job even without removing the body. I thought I needed inner sill repairs. Each piece taken off revealed another which needed repair before the first could be fixed. One side needed almost everything done. ££££. Now awaiting front shroud repair (well-hidden accident damage)Bob West providing part. At least necessary replacement of the front chassis extension will allow me to fit an anti-roll bar and should be straight enough to let me use the starting handle (whilst tuning only, I hope!) Ho hum; I hadn't spent anything significant on it in 14 years of ownership. Just gritting my teeth for respray...

Hi Shane

If you are still at that stage, then I don't feel guilty that I only put your washer pump in the post this evening!

Dominic, Absolutely no need to worry about that. Thanks anyway. I shall enjoy trying to make it work.
