MG MGA - Malta - Classic Car Heaven

I am just back from 2 weeks holiday in Malta, what a classic car heaven. It was Nick asking where all the As had gone that inspired me to report on this.

On our first Sunday We went by coach from one end of the island to the other taking about 90 slow mins. We must have passed around 30 British classic cars including Bs, Midgets, a C, and Fs but no A. Also many mundane saloons that you rarely now see in UK. I suppose they never salted their roads.

The following week we visited the Malta Classic Car Collection, as recently featured in an enthusiastic article in the MGOC magazine. I agree with the author that it is the most fun car museum I have ever been to. It is all 1950s and 1960s cars, and some motor bikes. Mostly Briish but also a variety from other countries. Included are most models of MGs of the period but no A. There is an information board for an A but the car wasn't there.

Last Sunday we were having dinner outside when a OEW A went passed. Was this you in the whit MGAS in Mellieha last Sunday evening?????????????????

Curiously, I'm going over there for a wedding next weekend.

I've been a few times in the past, as my other half is Maltese, although I never seem to be there on a Sunday, when all the classic car action happens.

This time will be different, although I will have to try hard to escape.

Hopefully Frank Camilleri will be able to advise if there is anything happening next Sunday?

Hi Dave,

I am not aware of any sports car events this weekend. I myself am a member of the Classic Sports Car Club - Malta, and I can tell you that our club is not organizing anything at all this Sunday. At this time of the year the sun is scorching hot, and it is not ideal weather for open top sports cars to be out in the roads. Some sports car owners do however drive around the island despite the heat. I guess they will be the young drivers, not me for sure. But, if you visit Qawra and Bugibba on Sunday mornings, you will most likely see a few classics parked there. The favourite place now for classics to be seen is outside the Malta National Aquarium, always on Sunday mornings of course. I believe Ghajn Tuffiha is another favourite place on Sundays for all sorts of vintage cars and also classic motor cycles. There is a very well organised motor cycle club on the island, and a Harley Davidson club. Just information, I believe there are about 20 to 24 MGA's scattered around these islands, Gozo included, maybe more, not so sure.

Thank you Frank.

The only cars parked near the Aquarium on Sunday were a Vauxhall Cresta PB and an MGB Roadster.

There were a few cars cruising around, a couple of old BSA motorcycles and a pair of Honda 'fours'.

I can confirm that the sun IS scorching hot!

Hi Dave,

as I said the very hot sun keeps sports car owners indoors. Have you visited the classic car museum in Qawra?
Hope you enjoyed you stay just the same, and that you sipped a good few ice cold beers. Nothing beats cold beer in this heat.

Regards

Sorry Dave, I can't get your photo bucket to open, no matter how hard I try.

The classic car group I passed on the morning of Sunday 8 June that were driving north just south of Mellieha. There were no As but included at least a Midget and a C, was this your club? The OEW A I saw was on the following Sunday 15 evening going up the hill into Mellieha from the beach.

Paul,

yes, I have a feeling the Midget and the MGC that you saw at Mellieha were two of our club members on their way to Gozo. We had a day trip to Gozo organized on that Sunday, but for me the sun was too bright and the heat unbearable, so, instead, I took the wife out to the Sliema strand in my little air conditioned super mini (Daihatsu Sirion), and we sat down on the promenade for a couple of cold drinks.
The temperature in the shade today is 34 C, can you imagine if I'm out in my A and I get stuck in a traffic jam (of which there are many over here), the state I'll be in after 20 mins or so sitting in an open top car in the burning sun? Not very comfortable at all.
