MG MGA - MGA Insurance

Hi All
I need to insure my car for general use for all the family to drive. Has anyone got good/bad info regarding the companies out there. I would appreciate any advise/experiences on the best options/companies.

Assuming that you mean classic car insurance Brian, be very careful of the small print, some companies have some ridiculous rules which are almost impossible to comply with.

Such as insisting that you lock the doors and erect the soft top when you leave the MGA on the garage forecourt to pay for the fuel. They actually told me that I had to fit locks to my roadster!
They also insisted that I must always park the car in a locked garage if I was away from home. There were other stupid rules as well.

I would personally recommend Hagerty who have a much more reasonable and realistic approach to classic car insurance.

Apologies to those other classic car insurance providers out there who I may have offended who, like Hagerty, do not have those unrealistic terms and conditions in their policies.

I have heard that Peter Best and Adrian Flux are similar to Hagerty similar in having very sensible and customer friendly Ts and Cs.

(hope to have avoided any legal action here! :-)

Hi Colyn
Thanks for the information. I will contact all 3 and any more that are recommended. I am sure no legal actions will be taken.

I am with RH under their Brooklands Policy and I have none of the issues that Colyn raises. For £131 I get fully comp, European travel and breakdown cover, including abroad. The wording simply says that I take all reasonable care over the vehicle's safety. It does mention spare keys when abroad so I guess I need to keep a spare ignition key which galls me. I was trying to keep my spares to nil Colyn!

Steve, I have never come across RH before,
that is a really good price and I will contact them for my next renewal to see what they can offer.

Brian, whenever I contact a classic car insurance provider, even when I am renewing the policy, I ask them directly about the door locking and softop issue at petrol stations, about whether they insist on the car being locked in a garage when I am away from home.

The most ridiculous thing I came across in one of the company's Ts & Cs was that they would provide cover for "leisure usage", for example- a drive to the seaside, but if I stopped off and parked at a supermarket on the way home for a pint of milk etc, then that activity was not considered "leisure usage" and the car was therefore not covered there!?

To be fair, these crazy conditions were not usually the fault of the insurance companies, but were invoked by their underwriters who obviously didnt understand the special requirements that classic car owners really need.

Cheers

Surely Colyn, in line with your thorough approach to spares you will have two polices in case one has terms in the small print you hadn't noticed.

Graeme Williams

Nice one Graeme! :-)

So are you suggesting that I should take out an insurance policy on my insurance policy?

Do I then takeout insurance on my second policy, just in case?

My head is starting to hurt now! :-)

We have used RH for many years and only have good things to say about them (at the moment we have 4 cars on one policy with them). Have used their recovery services a couple of times with no problems.

Brian,

Living in Indonesia and keeping the MGs in England has complicated insurance matters for me; insurers don't seem to like people who are out of the 'mainstream'.

Gradually I have moved each policy over to Hagerty, after other, unnamed, insurers making life difficult; the MGA first, then the TD and PB and the 'new' TC.

Admiral are having negative publicity relating to their Big Brother methods on Facebook vis-a-vis young drivers.

At least one of the Australian crews on the 2015 MGA 60 Land's End - John o'Groats tour had major breakdowns and the service from Hagerty was most impressive.

Hagerty's advertisement - The Hard Way / The Easy Way {1. Call Hagerty. 2. Go for a Relaxing Drive}; hits the nail on the head, in my experience.

Steve and Colyn, I would be interested to ask if your policies restrict you to a maximum annual mileage?

Just out of curiosity has anyone who made a reasonable claim actually suffered from the more unreasonable terms actually being applied? I supose what I am saying is this real problem or just a hypothetical one.

Paul
Paul Dean

I haven't heard of any disputed claims Paul but I personally would not wish to risk it.

I honestly wouldn't expect an insurer to pay out if they have an existing clause in their policy which says that your car is not covered in certain specific circumstances.

Doug, Hagerty do have an agreed limited mileage policy but you agree this in advance and if you are getting close to exceeding it, you just call them to let them know and they extend this.
(They may charge you a little more for this)

It's good to know that Hagerty gave such great service Doug, I'm certainly happy with them.

Cheers

Colyn

No mileage restriction with RH. I did ask them to remove the roadside windscreen cover on mine but to no avail. Not sure many windscreen replacement vehicles carry plastic sport screens for the MGA.
