MG MGA - MGA King Dick Jack

I have just received some excellent pictures showing the King Dick B1077 'Bow Tie' jack supplied to the majority of MGA cars.

The owner believes this to be an original jack. If so, I am amazed at its quality after all these years. Could someone who has bought one of the Moss reproductions please advise me if the numbers on the winding gear and saddle are also on the Moss version.

I attach a photo of the Shelley 7DL that I got from somewhere many decades ago. A specific point below the 7DL down the one side is an 'R' in a different form to the 7DL, it is visible on photo if magnified. Does this mean something?

Not seen that before, so I do not have a clue at the moment. Mine just has the date block below as shown in the photo.

As an aside, I am surprised how few of these jacks ever come up for sale bearing in mind that they were apparently supplied to about 60,000 to 80,000 MGAs. I have recorded only 3 Ebay sales in the last year, only one more than the Shelley LJ23 which equipped the early 1500s and the same number as the Shelley LJ225 which equipped the last 9,000 ish cars.

Steve, I looked at my King Dick jack, purchased at a swap meet last year. I can't say for sure if its an original or the Moss repro, but it also is in very good condition. It has King Dick cast on the side, and B1077 on the base as shown in your photo. Above the B1077 is a small cast "1" instead of SF. One photo on your website clearly show the SF, but it sure looks like "8F" in the main pic. My jack also has A3781 cast into the winding gear, and 4201 under the yoke (3201 is shown on the photos). I hope someone with a known Moss jack adds additional information here.

Gordon Pugh contacted me off-line. He has a Moss reproduction. This is what he said:

"...., the repo does have some of the markings. The bottom number is there but not the two numbers above it, it has the king Dick down the barrel but the stamping is very poor compared to the one in your photo. In my opinion, not expert, that is very definately an original jack. It makes the Moss one look very poor in comparison."

With what George also says it's beginning to look like the one in my database is an original. All I can say is that it in all its years it has never been used. I cannot see a mark of wear on it.

I am always interested in recording jack variations in my databases. Any chance you could email me a picture showing the different letters/numbers casting?

I have seen plenty of castings that make the S and 8 indiscernible. I wonder what the SF or 8F stood for?

Hi Steve & other jack people,
I have the original jack supplied with my car - a King Dick SF B1077 the same as the one in the pictures you supplied. All numbering is clearly visible. The only difference is that under the yoke is 4201 as not 3201 as in your picture(it certainly looks like 3201 although strangely enough in the text he actually states it is 4201). I can supply pictures if you want them.
All the best,
Phil

Yes please Phil. Can you email me a few piccies please. I have asked Gordon also to send me pictures of the Moss variant. I want to try to make it clear for potential buyers to realise if they are buying an original or repro.

As an aside I am still trying to narrow down the MGA changeover chassis number from the Shelley LJ23 to the King Dick. I think it may be in the 20,000 range. What is your number?
