MG MGA - MGA on a Two Post Ramp

A friend is brining his MGA over to use my Two Post Ramp.

The normal jacking points for the supplied jack are under the front wishbone and under the rear leaf spring as shown in the handbook.

Wil I be able to get the arms of the two post in there or what points you guys use with your experiance.

Apart from saying use a four post ramp.

I have never had an MGA in my garage.

I have no experience of a 2 post lift. I use a hydraulic scissor lift. However, I guess the same considerations apply. One thing the MGA has going for it is a strong box section separate chassis. With careful adjustment of the lifting arms I am able to find 4 suitable points on the chassis to lift the car quite happily. This leaves all the wheels and axles hanging free for work in those areas if need be. The points I use are at the back of the front wheel arches where the chassis straightens to run down the side of the car and at the rear just in front of the forward rear springs hangers.

Eddie. x2 on jacking points as Steve describes. Have some soft wood blocks available, or rubber blocks to shim jack points as required, for a stable lift.

I use a two post lift quite a bit and use the chassis where Steve suggests.

Watch the rear axle check straps when you lift the car, they may well stretch and cause the axle to rest on the exhaust potentially damaging the rubber mounting.

Steve I'm interested in the hydraulic ramp you refer to. Can you tell me anymore about it please.

I would not recommend mine. I made a mistake. You can see it here if you scroll down on my opening page: http://www.mgaroadster.co.uk/

Despite all the sales blurb I got from the company that sold it to me I found that it is too wide to slide underneath from the front and rear on a standard disc wheel 1500. It is only because I fitted wire wheels on the standard axle that the rear wheel track is just wide enough to accept the lift. However, no problems if you want to push the lift in from the side. I now have the lift as a permanent installation under the car and have built a drive on ramp to overcome the problem.

I believe a better ramp design is being used by some of the guys down-under. Mike Ellsmore is a good chap to comment and give you the details.

Picture of my set-up attached.

thanks Steve. I have seen lifts from CJ Autos at shows, they will be at the NEC at the weekend. that lift the car and tilt. Not sure how good they are(or how safe!) ion actual use. Looked at you web site, I am also in the process of fitting the Pertronix ignition you have, so glad to recommend it. I also plan some time in the future to convert to front Discs, but I'm waiting for Moss to have a VAT free sale.
Cheers Paul

Lighter, cheaper and much less space intensive is a professional trolley jack with a high lift, and a set of four stands. I can lift a car high enough to be able to use a creeper board under the car and be able to reach everything very comfortably
