MG MGA - MGA Wheels width/off set

Hi Fellas,
Just rebuilding my fathers MGA for his 80th birthday.

Its not a standard car having done three Pirelli marathons in the late 80s and Manx classic races.

It will be a quick road car when done.
Doing lots of mods as we go like Honda 6 speed gearbox..

I was wondering if anyone has put some wide wheels on and if so what off set?
I could do some measuring when its nearly done but need to order the wheels asap so as not be without.

If no one has wide ones on then if someone could have measure for me. Like the gap between spring and rim edge.

Your help much appreciated!

Rob,

I have TR6 wheels on mine. They are of a similar style as the original wheels, but are 5 1/2" wide and have a bit more offset. My plan has been to drill out the welds and reweld to match the offset of the original wheels, but they do fit within the body as is.

Hi Ken,
Are you sure they are only 5.5? They always look alot wider on a TR6.

I can pull the wings out a bit with the wheeling machine. I am wanting to fit 7.5.
I have the original wheels to measure and work out what I need if someone can measure the gap between spring and rim..

The TR6 wheels have less backset than the MGA wheels, i.e., the rim sits farther from the centerline of the car, making them look wider than they are. I think a 6" rim with normal MGA backset is about all you can fit in an unmodified fender.

Rob,

Having now measured the wheels, the TR6 wheels have a backset of 3-1/2", the MGA wheels have 4". Rim-to-rear leaf spring with the TR wheel is 2-3/4" on one side and 3" on the other; the MG wheels would be 2-1/4" to 2-1/2" from the spring.

Rob,

the following website is quite useful - it gives all the details (offset, etc.) for wheels and list a number of alternatives that would fit the A.

Good luck,

Grant :-)

That web site appears to have information for wire wheels only.

Thanks a million chaps!

Works out at with the 7.5s 12mm clearance (sorry Ken, all the offset calcs are in metric) to the spring.
43mm wider wing wise, 1-11/16".

Fairly sure they'll fit as I have made the rear wings in aluminium and they are wider than original.
