MG MGA - MGs at silverstone

Some times I get my timing right. I will be in the UK just in time for the MG Silverstone week end ! !
I would appreciate local knowledge on travelling from Oxford. I'll have a car, but is there any public transport ? What is the best day Saturday or Sunday, to avoid the worst traffic ? How early should I arrive ? Thanks Sean
S Sherry

No public transport of any kind that is meaningful. Traffic was not bad the two times I have been. Arrive early, leave late, not because of the traffic but because of the stalls, the racing, the beautiful cars, and I am sure a few people from this BBS

Best to drive, Sean. I've never seen a bus along that little road.

Timing isn't too much of a problem. If you'd like to see the California Cup autotesting, it's at about 9.30 on Saturday, followed by excellent racing, and Sat is the better day in my view (but that's because I'll be wrenching an MGA around the cones). I believe the Sprint is on Sunday, though.

Also the traders have more stuff on Sat. - though Friday afternoon just after they've set up is the time for real bargains.

Sean,
No public transport to speak of, but easy run from Oxford. North on the A34 to Bicester, on to A421 to Finmere, country lanes through Water Stratford, past Stowe Gardens, through Dadford, on to Silverstone circuit. Avoid the A43, that's where all the traffic queues are. Get an Ordnance Survey map of the area when you arrive in Oxford. If you've not been to the MGCC weekend before, you're in for a real treat (weather permitting!) Look out for OEW 1600 mkll ESK683 in the car park with 60 yr old crew and we'll have a good natter!! I prefer Sunday, plenty to see and good racing with the pre-war MGs, the T-types and the endurance race, but any day is good!! Adrian B.

Hi The best method is to fly in by helicopter, this seems to be the prefered method at the British Grand Prix weekend, it looks like a scene from the Vietnam War without the napalm. I'm going by Twin Cam. I think the best day is Saturday but there is something going on all weekend, you probably need both days to get a glimpse of everything.

As its Silverstone, I suggest you base your choice on the weather forecast.

A lot of people stay all weekend, and as a result Saturday goes on for into the evening.

By about 3.30 on Sunday a lot of the traders are starting to pack up, and as races finish, people tend to leave.

If you go on Saturday you can go by coach. There are various operators e.g Stagecoach sevice X88 that takes about an hour from oxford to Silverstone. most services are limited on Sundays. You could also get a coach to Buckingham and hitch a lift from there(servces are more frequent as it is on the route to Cambridge) Cheers, Dave
