MG MGA - mylar around coupe window

Getting down to the last bits on the Coupe. I am ready to install the mylar strip around the front and rear glass rubber. Any suggestions or tricks on how to do this?

I have a spare stainless set that I might be interested in selling for the "right" price. I'm pretty sure I have both front and rear sets. I was actually thinking about listing them on fleaBay.

As for installing them, there is a special tool that you can use to push the strip while spreading the rubber lips of the channel. I used to see them for sale on a British auto upholsterer's website (can't remember the name). Otherwise, I've heard that popsicle sticks are helpful to get the lip over the strip. Probalby best to install before putting the assembly on the car.

M.D., I might be interested in your set, are they original, condition, etc. Contact me at <gag@aps.anl.gov>

George:

I have one front set that I know is NOS, as it still has the BMC wrapping on it. I cannot be as certain of the others. I can send you photos in the next few days, if you like.

So I'm assuming you have the front windshield piece, and the pieces for the three rear windows....? Yes, photos would be appreciated.

Thanks, George

The trim company is woolies trim

CORRECT! Woolies used to have those installation tools on their website.

They are actually brass and rechrome nicely. When I was restoring mine I did not find the originals until the car was complete. I was able to install them easily after the windows were in. I think the workshop manual tells you to put them in before, but being so delicate I would be worried about damaging them. Many years ago I had a window guy replace the front window of a VW bug that uses the same type of window mounting. He had a tool that he made from a screwdriver,I copied it and have done my windows my self ever since. You don't want to pry on the glass at all but you can pull the rubber easily over the body lip. It also works to put the chrome in too. George there are 2 pieces for the front and 2 for the rear, then there are 4 small pieces that are used to finish off the seam where the 2 main pieces come together, top and bottom. Someone,Moss or Todd Clarke used to sell just those 4 parts as they they are chrome brass also

b,
If you go with the Mylar strips, note that the "joint covers" supplied by MOSS with their trim strip do not fit. They are supplying joiners that fit the original chromed strips. I had to make my own to fit the Mylar strip as it has a different cross-section (much thicker). I made them in aluminium and polished them.
My wife and I fitted the 4 strips , 2 front and 2 rear, in about an hour. I used a blunt screw driver to lift up the rubber, while she pushed the strip with lots of washing-up liquid on it as lubricant.
Not too difficult, just a lot of sweat.
It has already cracked on the curves just 2 years after fitting!

Fortunately I have original chrome/brass finishers front and back on my 60 Coupe. I have heard of others fitting the mylar finishers and having success in using a heat gun or hot hair dryer when shaping the acute corners.- No cracking. Sometimes a little adhesive also helps at the bottom rear corners which may want to pop out after a while.

MD, I am also interested in purchasing this trim set pending condition. Please contact me at kbcaya@comcast.net, it's one of the few items on my car that is not original.

Well, since I brought up the subject, maybe I can get first crack at your original MD? Give me a right price?

Peter is correct about the "joint covers". I used to have a mylar strip on my rear windscreen, and the joint covers were constantly popping loose. Now that I have the original finisher, no problem with the joint covers.

I will take pictures of my spare sets over the long weekend and send them to those who expressed interest. B. Dryden - I would need your e-mail address to send you photos.
