MG MGA - New Batter Time

Time for a new battery for my 58, is it a Series 21 that I need ( I have converted to a single 12V)??

I believe I have a group 26 battery in ours. Measure your battery box and tke the meqasurments with you to the store. Most batteries have a flange on two sides just above the bottom for american car hold down clamps, you may need to shave these off.

I also have a group 26 in mine. If you shop around at your local auto parts stores you can probably find one without the flanges on the bottom. The group 26 doesn't quite fit the standard battery box. The width is ok, but front to back is a little too big. I cut and welded the front rail slightly forward to get enough room. I have just installed a new battery today.AC Delco 530 cold cranking amps 650continuous rated amps reserve capacity 95 mins 160mm wide 230mm long 190mm high $140 Aus These fit in the lhs battery box with minimal modification and come with a 3year warranty.I have done this on other A's and they work well.

To confuse even more: I recently installed an Optima battery (gel type). Since their web site did not list a specific battery for the A, I contacted them with the specs on my old Sears battery and they recommended their Red Top model 8022-091: CCA = 720; CA = 910; Rserve = 90. Since this battery can be installed upside down or even on it's side, slipping it into the existing battery tray was a snap (terminal side up of course). Battery was pricy (bought on the Web & shipped in), but I expect it to last more that the standard units. //nk
