MG MGA - New Moss Cold Air Intake

Have you seen this "new product" in the latest catalogue, 223-065. It looks attractive and well designed to efficiently provide cold-air intake for MGAs with S U carbs. It might even provide a little positive air pressure. $200. Over the years we have seen a few DIY versions, and I am surprised it took 50 years + for some one to offer one. I am about to spring for one but wanted to toss-this-out for any comments or experiences with it. Thank you my friends.

It looks a little suspect to me. From the picture it looks like the air filter is still aft of the radiator in the warm air zone. I would like to connect the box to the original air tube at the radiator diaphragm with a flex hose, hen put the air cleaner forward of the radiator in the cool air zone. There is an example of that arrangement on my web site (in DIY form).
Barney Gaylord

I am with Barney. Looking at the design I would not be supprised if you get a venturi effect at the front of the air filter (note the front of the filter is solid plastic and not filter element) and hence a low pressure area around the filter. Or maybe not. I know strange things happen with air flow in ,over and around objects - refer to air flow through ( or not ) the engine bay vents on the MGA.
Not even pretending to be an expert but I would hate to see you waste you money. Looks like a very nice airbox for insallation as Barney suggests.

This thing is actually blocking full air flow through the 4" hole!

I doubt Moss would be selling this if it hadn't been thoroughly tested. If it hadn't I'm sure they'll be getting a lot of returns....worth a shot in MHO.
Gene Gillam

I was under the impression that very little 'free flow' air passes through that 4" pipe at average motoring speeds due to the aerodynamics around the front grill area. As Art says 3/4 of that hole is then blocked off by the plastic disc at the end of the air filter. The result is that air will be drawn mainly from the engine compartment. Its position possibly makes it worse off than the standard position whereby the pancake filters at least draw outside air down through the 'MGA' air vents and have a full uncluttered 4" pipe at the front to supplement..

I see in Illus. #5 the vent pipe from the MGA rocker cover has nowhere to attach to and they just have it hanging in limbo....where should that attach do you suppose.....?
Thomas Koch

It could probably benefit from extending the tube through the radiator panel using some 4 inch flex duct (the cheap guys will use dryer hose!) and installing the filter in front of the radiator panel.

Maybe you could even install a bilge blower as well to have the maximum amount of toys in the new intake path. But if you really want to improve the intake, you could just save the $200 as the first payment on a supercharger, then you really will notice the difference!

Or you could instead just use what has worked very well for the last fifty years.

Hey Dominic, it's very good quality dryer vent, none of yer plastic rubbish.
Art Pearse

Sam,

I have seen this on an MGA. It bolts to the SUs with only one bolt on each. I do not like this.

The hose goes through the 4 inch steel pipe where the air hose would usually clamp, and the K & N filter sits in front of the radiator.

Until I see some dyno results, I am going to assume you'll get more from a good set of velocity stacks.

What you describe isn't what is shown in the pictures in the instructions available under Mike's link. There the filter is sitting with its snout in the vent hole in the radiator bulkhead. Have they modified the kit but not documented the change? The pictures of the MGB installation show pretty much the same issues as for the MGA.

BTW thanks for your efforts with SF -still heard zilch from them!

Dominic,

I'll try to get some photos of the MGA set up, but the owner is not near here.

Sorry about the SF affair. She called me, and I told her she should be emailing you! She asked eBay for copies of your emails, but they did not send her anything! Seems like the reporting system is broken.

Hi Peter

If the ebay reporting system was "broken" there would be thousands of ebay traders up in arms over refunds. The ebay forums are silent on the issue, so I can only deduce that the problem is absolutely not with ebay!

I'll stay with my nice unobtrusive 3" Bilge Blower thank you. Apart from being a very expensive option, the engine bay will now look modified with that intake. I don't think the standard MGA will benefit when on the road. It won't be taking in cool air when the car is stationary like a blower can give and the carburetors and flexibles will not be cooled when the car is stationary either. I don't think the gentlemen at Moss understand our special machines...
Queuing into MG90 at Beaulieu last Sunday took us about 1/2 hour in 1st gear or stopped. That little blower was superb and the tick-over remained rock solid with no hint of vapourisation. My two penneth.

Sam, Mike, and Dominic,

See the photos attached of the MGA fitment. it turns out that the owner added a pce of pipe to extend the hose, and that is why the air filter is forward of the radiator. I did not know this when I saw the arrangement originally.

Another photo to show the filter position.

Note the single bolts on each carburetor in the first photo.

P. Tilbury

Well at least he did not use dryer hose.
