MG MGA - New Poster.. and Seat Belt Question

Good Evening,

I am an escapee from the Sprite and Midget Section having just swapped my Mk4 Sprite for a 1600 Mk2 Roadster. I still have one foot in that camp as I also have a Frogeye.

However, the question which is puzzling me concerns seat belts. I know there are arguments for and against, but leaving that aside I am trying to identify the top mounting points for seatbelts in the Mk2 roadster. The picture in the manual (SS1) isn't at all clear to me. There appears to be a relatively lightweight inverted top hat section steel running fore and aft each side under the rear cover and this has two captive nuts (unused). This seems to fit the description in the manual but the picture doesn't show it. Is this the mounting provision or is it somewhere else?

Graeme, you are lucky in having the brackets already insitu. You should also have the brackets that are welded to the chassis just aft of the seat backs. The seat belt mounting kits are available from Clarke Spares in PA, USA (Todd Clarke as he is universally known).

This page on the MGAGURU site will explain in more detail the location and setup of the Mk 2 seat belt anchorage points. Clarke Spares aftermarket anchorages replicate the factory setup.

Graeme,
I always thought that the top fixing would be too weak in event of it really being loaded in a shunt, and expect it would simply buckle, collapse or tear.
I made up some brackets and fastened them to two of the rear wing bolts (in the cockpit) where they fasten to the body tub.

Colin: are they the two bolts/captive nuts about 4" hotizontally apart about 6" below the tonneau panel in the side panels?
Graeme Williams

Graeme,
The attached picture should explain. The bracket sits on top of the welded nuts with locknuts securing it to longer bolts. The belt fixing is MGB and, though not shown in the photo, has locknuts on the underside.

Colin: thanks for pic. Was that top-hat section under the tonneau originally intended for seat belts? AS you say, it looks pretty insubstantial!
