I am sure Steve will now look for an aircraft hangar with house attached - only trouble is it hasn't got an engine - perhaps it has the toolkit to compensate!

Only one owner!!

Please don't tell Gyles about things like this! Think of his long suffering wife! And the neighbours!

No problem for me or her indoors - the link will not open for me, so none the wiser!

What is it?

Its a lightening Steve, English Electric, not the Lockheed version.
No engines apparently but otherwise in good condition.
I think Gordon is right Steve, it would look really great parked on your lawn RAF style near your front gate security office!

Apparently Geremy Clarkson has one on his lawn so you would be in good company as he is generally a fan of older MGs.

I still cannot open the link. Do you know which mark of Lightning and serial number? I have flown the one that is on Clarkson's lawn.

We should do what they do on roundabouts in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and have a different theme on each. I have seen a Mini on one, a fishing boat on another, an aircraft etc. they navigate by them, whereas in the UK we navigate by pubs!

I can't open it now either but could yesterday. I think Mrs Gyles is blocking it just in case.
Malcolm Asquith

Hi Steve, I expect they've taken it off sale to give it to the rebels in Libya

The link seems to slow down and stop so it must have a problem.
I recall it being in Lincolnshire Steve but Im sorry I didnt take note of the Mk or the numbers.

Was Clarksons Lightning parked on his lawn on purpose or was it one of your fellow pilots less-good landings?

By the way, just noticed a post by "RAF Finucane" on the TD board, does anyone know if there is any connection to the Battle of Britain fighter pilot?

Dont know if you noticed that the Vulcan flew into Doncaster Airport yesterday Steve and is going to be based there in one of its its original RAF Finningley hangers.
I hope to be able to get to go see it soon.
I know the Vulcan is not quite a Lightning Steve but still a classic British airplane in its own right.

Just had a thought, if there are any other combined MGA / military aircraft fans around, it could make for a great excuse to get the cars out and meet at one of the aircraft museums for the day or even a weekend.

MGA Register meet at Brooklands weekend after this. Concorde, Harrier, Hunter, Wellington, Hurricane, SE5A. etc.

Plenty of cars in the Museum, including MGs.

When I was restoring my car I lived near Cranfield, and used to get the Vintage Aircraft Team there to do a few bits for me. They used to wait until the runway closed for air traffic, and then thrash my company car up and down the runway, saying it was as much fun as the old jets because of the acceleration (Renault 5 GT Turbo....)

I went flying once in something they had finished there but have no idea what it was any more, out of the late 50s or early 60s, so about the same age as the A. Vampire is in the back of my mind but I'm not sure. Great fun though.

Steve: XM173 Lightning T5

Dominic

Thanks. My logbooks are in store so it will be a while before I can check, but I don't think I flew that one. XM173 is in fact a single seat Mk1A, not a two seat trainer (T4 and T5).

Picture attached of XM173.

Hi Colyn I thought we were all aircraft nuts!

Heres where the MGCC Licolnshire centre will be on july 10th With the Lancaster
http://mgcclincolnshire.co.uk/ check out calender

Here is a video I made of the same event but a few years earlier

The video is in 2 parts so please after part 1 is complete watch part 2. Some of it is boring but please be patient, the second part of the video is the flight of a Spitfire trainer and a air display by the Battle of Britain flight Lancaster Again be patient the Lanc takes quite a while to make the passes.

If nothing else the music is emotive.

I had intended to come down to Brooklands for the day Steve but I will be over in Spain that weekend so cant make it unfortunately.

Count me in for the Lincs centre Day at the Aviation Centre in July though Bob, looks like it will be right up my street.

Lightning Mk1. Yes, before my time, but I recognised most of the pilots. Knew the boss quite well, he was my Station Commander for a while.

Now, did one of the pilots drive an MGA...........?

Probably
