MG MGA - Oversized brake shoes?

Has anyone else had trouble getting their MGA off the line due to oversized brake shoes?

Is it a reversing competition?!!

Great shot Mike.

I had to look twice, here in the US, PBR stands for one of the worst hipster beers of all time, Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Sorry if I offended any PBR beer fans.

Cheers,

Larry, you snob beerist you! (Just kidding!) I don't drink a lot of beer but I do enjoy a PBR now and again during the summer picnic months. I find it more refreshing than most. It goes well with outdoor summer activities. Didn't know it was a hipster beer though. I had to look up Hipster to find out what it means. "20-30's people that value individual thinking". Geeze, I've been drinking PBR longer than those kids have been alive! Generally I gravitate toward local craft breweries though.

Back on topic now, Notice the nice MG logos embedded in the concrete bases. Kind of a narrow gap between them though. I can't imagine coming thru there 2 abreast at 100 MPH. Not much room for error. And there aren't any guard rails or water barrels or tires or nuttin' You guys live on the edge.
Chuck Schaefer

Chuck, it's a Hillclimb track, owned by the MGCC Victoria (Melbourne).
Gary Lock

Ahhhhh, that makes more sense then! Obviously, I was thinking a road racing course. Coming thru there at 1 to 3 MPH (5KPH) up to the start line makes it a LOT SAFER.

As Gilda Radner once said, "Oh, well that’s different then. Never mind."
Chuck Schaefer

Mike, is that your car on the line? Any shots of the rest of the course?

Great photo, by the way.

"Geeze, I've been drinking PBR longer than those kids have been alive!"

Me too, Chuck, me too (not specifically PBR, but beer).

Very perceptive of you Steve - the reason the signage is on the downstream side is because the council planning permit for the site does not allow any permanent signage that can be seen from the nearby public road. The other side of the brake shoes has no signage.

Larry, PBR stands for Paton Brake Replacements - an old Australian company that was taken over by Bosch a few years ago. The brake shoes were originally erected at the Templestowe (Melbourne - Australia)hill climb track back in 1957. This track closed in 1987 when the site was subdivided for housing. They lay in storage until the MG Car Club arranged for them to be refurbished in 2007. It took awhile to raise the funds to restore, get council approval for the installation and do the restoration and install at the MGCC (Victoria) Rob Roy hill climb track. We had the official opening last Sunday at the 20th Historic & Classic Hill Climb - 105 entries. We believe they are the largest brake shoes in the world - 32' high!
This link gives some more detail on the site http://www.mgcc.com.au/robroy/index.shtml including a Google Maps link.
Yes the photo above is of my coupe - we should have a lot of photos of the other competitors on the club web site later this week. http://gallery.mgcc.info/
In the mean time here is another photo of me smiling!

Yeah Larry he is quite a character and regularly turns in the fastest time of the day against a wide variety of vehicles not just MGs (it is a very warm B series motor 2000cc with twin 45 webers, cross flow head, etc.- note his racing number 666!
