MG MGA - paint spraying
Does anyone know a web forum, similar to this one perhaps, where I can air a specific problem on spraying which has been bothering me for a couple of weeks? Mike |

I want to second that autobodystore link. A lot of professionals post there, but they seem very willing to help amateurs. |

Why not try here as well, I am sure there is plenty of spraying experience too! |

Thanks a lot guys. I registered on the autobodystore site and would you believe it there was a recent thread where another member had asked about exactly the same problem I have viz. an air leak into the fluid line causing a pulsed spray. All I need to do now is to find the leak. Mike |

m.j., The usual culprit is a leak at the adjustable packing gland around the fluid needle. Tighten it a bit and the problem should go away. |

That is the 'mgaguru.com' of painting sites. I used it all the time. Single stage, 5 years outside and the car still looks great! I too had a pulse when I sprayed. With Len's help, I traced down the air leak to the teflon gasket between the cup and body (used a GFC or CFG Devilbiss 670). After that all was well. |

I was pretty sure the leak wasn't at the needle gland because I'd already tightened this up until the needle wouldn't move and then backed off the minimum to make it free to slide. Also the fluid tip had been tightened up to the recommended 20lb ft. So I connected the air pressure line to the paint pick-up tube and immersed the gun in a bucket of water and there was stacks of air coming from the fluid tip holes indicating that the tip wasn't sealing where it screwed into the body. I then removed the tip and brass baffle (the gun is a JGA-558)and reassembled them without the copper and plastic gaskets. The amount of slack in the baffle was only 12 thou whereas the copper gasket measured 47 thou. So I'm thinking that this gasket is not the correct one and much too thick. If anyone has got one of these gaskets to hand I would be grateful if you could let me know it's thickness. As the tip is new if it's not the gasket I'll be suspecting the brass baffle. Many thanks Mike |
