MG MGA - Petrol tank sender unit.

Hello friends,
Well it’s me again and once more I have a problem with my 1957 MGA. The tank sender unit float is slightly cracked, meaning that petrol is entering the float and the unit no longer function’s properly!!!
Therefore the float stays on the bottom of the petrol tank and the petrol gage always shows empty!!
My question is: Are floats available separately or do I need to buy the complete tank sending unit.
Thanks for your assistance and support.
Mike.

If the float is plastic you could try injecting some expanding foam into it. One hole for injection and an opposite one as a vent.

If brass you could try soldering it.

If your sender unit works well then do everything you can to retain the mechanism since you have a rarity.

Expanding foam won't work, you can buy universal plastic replacement sender unit floats on ebay--cheap as chips
If it's a brass one and you are going to resolder it's seam joint---If you poke a pin hole in a corner of it to empty it, then you can resolder it without the heat blowing the solder out then solder the hole up
If you don't put a hole in it ,it will be difficult to solder properly

If its the plastic one just use a small soldering iron and melt the plastic around the hole. Then reposition the float on the wire hook so that the end that poked the hole is relocated.
I have also ground a little ramp on the end so that it is not sharp where it nestles in.

Good evening friends, and thanks for all your tips and support pertaining to my MGA fuel tank sender unit problems.
So after a little research this is how I fixed the problem: An old Belgian mechanic, 87 years old, specialized in old timers advised me to use a cork from a Champaign bottle!!! Approximately the same size and weight (See pictures), so I did, and it works perfectly well, only the future will tell !!!!
Thanks again friends......
Mike.

Em. Could be interesting with modern petrols allegedly attacking cork?

Hi Paul,
I will keep you posted, let’s say in 6 months !!!!!
Cheers Mike.

Yeah, I would be less concerned with the cork sinking, than I would be with bits of cork coming off, and plugging up the fuel system.
