MG MGA - Points

Just to confirm my understanding of the wiring inside the dizzy:
The plate holding the contact assembly is grounded by way of the adjusting screw.
The spring of the points assembly is live and as the
connections to it (condenser wire and wire from outside the condenser) must contact the spring and not the pole retaining the spring, ie these wires go under the insulating sleeves)

I was just renewing the old points with new "lucas" part. I found the new part slotted plate was so close to the spring mount pole that the washers interfered preventing the points setting.

Art - that matches my understanding as well, and it seems that each time Ipit in a new set, the quality gets worse!

I had an odd problem while attending the 2024 100-year MG celebration event at Watkins Glen. It was an intermittent lack of spark that would be cured it seemed by pulling the distributor and checking the gap, which was almost always spot on.

Back home in South Carolina, a thousand miles later I found the connection to the coil, going out through the phenolic block, at the rivit, was, in technical tems, “Flaky”

Each time I removed the distributor caused a slight shift of the wire aound that rivit, temporarily “fixing” the problem!

Here a couple of years back we had never ending issues with copycat Lucas and Bosch ign.points that were being suplied in original looking packaging.
The problem with them was the contacts themselves, instead of being solid , the contacts were plated and as soon as the coating got burnt off there was no electrical circuit, they were only good for about 1000Klm at best.
Even the quality of the genuine sets have gone downhill significantly, it's very rare to find a set that comes out of the packet with the contacts aligned properly, they all need a bit of a tweek before fitting them.

We have a brand here called Fuelmiser and they 'appear' to be good quality, they certainly line up better and last well----same part No's as Lucas

Using modern Lucas parts is asking for trouble. They are cheaply made, out of spec and unreliable. The best points by far are from Distributor Doctor. I use nothing else and have suffered zero failures or other issues. His condensers are also top notch.

British Vacuum Unit in the USA is also very good. I've used their parts with no issues as well.
