MG MGA - Question for Dominic Clancy

Dominic Can you please confirm for me if it is legal to drive a car in Switzerland with wheel spinners fitted to it, my reason for asking is, I am taking my B to Switzerland next month, which is fitted with wheel spinners, many thanks.
Andy Tilney

Strictly speaking, you can't get a car MOT'd here with spinners but there are a lot of people driving with them fitted. I wouldn't worry about it. If it is legal where the car is registered you will be fine.

What is essential is a green card from your insurance company. Without that you run the risk of being forced to pay for third party insurance at the border (and at Swiss rates) - this is because you don't otherwise have any proof that your car is insured for being in Switzerland.

It looks like this and will make life a lot easier if you have any accidents

Thank you Dominic for your fast response to my question, insurance is no problem, I have that all sorted, I just didn't want to get stopped, and be stuck waiting a few days for a set of wheel nuts to arrive and pay a giant fine, we are going to the Grimsel area and the Italian lakes, is that anywhere near you, I know these areas quite well as when we were lads we came there most summers to climb in the Grimsel, and also at Locarno, just hope the weather is good and no snow
Andy Tilney

I can seconded the need for the green slip insurance. In 2015 (4) Aussie MGA tourists were pulled over at the border check point and charge $A400 fo have one issued even though we all had comprehensive insurance from a UK company who failed to issue us with the required green slip. Show border police copies of the policy didn’t cut it. (The only downside to a great trip)

Insurance may be sorted, but you need the green slip as part of your document package.

We came back from the Italian lakes in June via the Grimsel pass and did a quick ride up the Furka pass to the hotel. There were hundreds of motorcycles when we were there in June and not many cars.
We have wire wheels and spinners and no one took any notice of them. We weren't even stopped at any borders to check our papers. I did buy a motorway pass at the Simplon border which cost €36. My only problem in Switzerland in Bern was someone putting a garden gnome under the tonneau cover in the passenger seat!

John. Thank you for your reply with regard to the spinners, along with Dominic's, advice, I feel happier about driving to Switzerland with my spinners on the car,
Andy Tilney

Only marginally related. When driving our A Coupe in Switzerland we stopped at a set of traffic lights and the driver behind got out, tapped on the window and handed my wife her handbag containing all our documents, including green card, and money. The handbag had been there for about an hour after leaving our camp site and we were driving to a French border post. It was 1970 by the way but a close shave!

I have lost my cap while driving many times, and often found it trapped between the rear overrider and the body
