MG MGA - radio blanking plate

Hi all,

Has anyone of you ever painted the vinyl on the radio planking plate in another color with 2K body paint.
Mine is black now and the car will be OEW.But I am a bit afraid thate the paint will sisolve the vinyl.

Thanks and regards,
Herman

Herman,

Here in the UK it is possible to get plastic primer. You could try painting some vinyl with plastic prinmer and then painting it with the car paint to see what happens.

Hi John,

Thanks for the hint. But now I was wondering if the 1600 roadstars had a vinyl covered radio blankingplate or was it a painted metal blankingplate?

Herman, If you have a plate with a black crackle finish as the reproduction ones have then strip it off completely (paint stripper) and either paint in dash colour if you have a Mk.1 or vinyl to match the dash if you have a Mk.2.

It's surprising how many cars you see with the black finish incorrectly left on when finished in gloss with the chrome plated surround it will look so good you won't want a radio!...............Mike

Herman,

MGAs had radio blanking plates finished to match their dash boards (or instrument fascias), whether painted (as among 1500 and 1600 roadsters) or covered in vinyl (as for coupes, twin cams, MGA IIs). The replacement blanking plates commonly available through Moss are finished in crinkle black, appropriate for MGBs. This paint can be readily removed and the plate correctly refinished in correct MGA livery.

Maybe the paint that is used on new car, to protect the rockers and fenders from stone chips would work. It is a wrinkle finish, very tough and comes in several colours. When applied it would look like vynil.

Thanks for the comments guys.
The car is a 1600MKI,original color was(and will be)OIW.The blanking plate is covered in black vinyl.
So the blanking plate is not original.
I will remove the vinyl and give the blanking plate a coat of body color, OIW.
Thanks and regards,
