MG MGA - Rear Bumpers

Its time to replace my entire rear bumper, overriders, brackets, and mounting hardware. Probably the cracked license plate bracket too. I'll keep using the original lamp.

Does anyone have recent experience with our suppliers as to who has accurate reproductions? Quality and non Asian produced?

I'm planning on having my Amco overrider bars rechromed and will reinstall them as the are so unique.

Looks good with no bumper and the plate's dangling off of one of the mounts

Thanks for your help.

Ted, You have to be careful that the bumper face has the correct profile otherwise the over-riders won't fit properly.

When I bought my front and rear bumpers years ago the profile on the front bumper sections was incorrect and I had to grind the over-riders to get them to fit. The profile on the back bumper, however, was correct.

Also when I got a catalogue a while back from Scarborough Faire I noticed that Cecelia had gone to the trouble (and expense) of having her own tooling commissioned for the front bumpers to give the right profile. She made no mention of the rear bumper profile so maybe rear bumpers have always been good. I believe she supplies all the hardware for fitting the bumpers although I got mine from Todd Clarke.................Mike

Thanks, Mike

I've purchased the fasteners and such from Todd. The bumper and overriders are comming from Moss. Fingers crossed the fit is ok. I'm going ahead with new spring brackets too as the old ones were bent out of shape.

Moss bumper and overriders arrived, perfect contour fit. Todd's pieces look perfect. I'm having my Amco overrider bars rechromed

Now, what to do with my aluminium three piece front, planning on keeping it fitted, it just seems part of the car.

The Moss overriders are from Taiwan, no markings on the bumper.

This is the first time I have heard anybody mention the three piece aluminum front bumpers. I bought a car a long time ago and two of these pumpers came with the car. I have never used them but they sure seem like they would be a lot stronger that the steel ones. I would have to guess that you would have to spend some time polishing them but I think they would look nice.

Were the aluminium bumpers ever made by MG?

No, I do not believe they were.

Very expensive, heavy (cast) and will never look as good as chrome. I would think the only reason they were even made at all is because there were no longer any factory replacements left and no other available aftermarket supplier. For very low production volumes it obviously made sense for someone who was able to cast aluminium (and liked polishing).

Any good chrome shop can plate aluminum parts. Ask your local Harley Davidson dealer for the one he uses.
