MG MGA - Rear Hub Nut tool

Hi

I have another leaking rear hub seal and need the tool to undo and re-tighten the hub nut.

Does anyone in the Oxford / Cheltenham area have one I could borrow for a couple of days? I missed Colin Parkinson's batch of special tools. He has sold out and may not make any more unless there is some demand.

The hub seal was replaced by Oselli last October about 250 miles ago and I thought that they were decidedly unhelpful when I talked to them about it failing. It was a really poor approach to customer service I thought and I won't go back to them in a hurry.

So getting back to my original reason for making the new socket, it was because these tin tubes can slip off the big nut before they can get up to the required 180 ftlb!

Hopefully there will be a pic below.

I will make another small batch if I can get some more interest.

The sockets are 3/4in drive impact sockets, made to be a snug fit on the nut.

Price is £50. No VAT.

Here it is!

according to http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/tools/hub_socket.htm the flats are 1-60/64 across which is same as 1-15/16 . I looked online and there is available a 8 point 1-15/16 impact socket. http://www.tiretoolsonline.com/Grey-3542S-34-x-1-516-8-Point-Standard-Impact-Socket_p_36276.html
any reason why this won't work? Chuck

An 8 point socket is meant to work on a square nut, not an octagonal nut. Many years ago I got a 8 point impact socket and had it machined to fit the same octagonal nut used on the early MGBs. The points of the socket fit tightly in the middle of the flats on the octagonal nut. It works, but not real well. There is supposedly a spanner that is designed for the rear axles on one of the four wheel drives, but I don't recall which one. If someone wants to dig through the archives for the MGB Technical BBS, they could probably find it. Cheers - Dave

Charles, -- It most likely won't work. There is a big difference between an 8-point socket and an 8-sided socket. Similar to a 12-point socket being designed to drive hex nuts, the 8-point socket is designed to drive square nuts. Internally it has 16 flats arranged like an 8-pointed star. That arrangement will not fit on an 8-sided nut. To be similar in function you would need a 16-point socket to drive an 8-sided nut.

I'm pretty sure I replaced both rear hub nuts on my car many years ago. Perhaps the replacement nuts are are 1-15/16" across flats. I can't swear that the original ones were not 1/64" larger. Does anyone still have an original 8-sided hub nut? You know, one of those with all the chisel marks from when some DPO didn't have the right socket.

You mean this one

The link Barney shows is now dead, but the tool is OK, only chews the nuts in the middle of the flats

The black tool shown immediately above here is a 1/2" drive forged steel socket intended to be used on the front drive hubs of some small trucks and sport utility vehicles. It has four square drive keys inside which will catch 4 sides of the 8 sided nut (shown on the right). This appears to be a little loose and not an ideal fit, but because it is a strong forged steel part it seems to work quite well. It works like a flank drive socket, bearing on the flat sides of the nut a little away from the sharp corners. A club friend has recently used this socket with an air impact wrench to R & R a couple of these hub nuts. Perhaps one of the best features is a price as low as $12-USD at a local auto parts store. Markings on the socket are "PT" W1269 CR-V Taiwan (by Performance Tool) for Ford F150, F250, F350, Bronco, Ranger, Explorer with manual hubs 1995 and later. Here's a link to a similar tool (maybe the same one) sold by Advance Auto Parts - Ampro Wheel Bearing Locknut Tool T72044.
