MG MGA - Rear springs

These are the springs on my A. Can you identify them for me. There is a gap between the leafs and the holding shackle?
Appreciate your help

That shackle is not original to MGA, or MGB....

Is that the only odd thing about your springs?
Dominic Clancy

Yes. The shackles are the same both ends and there is a gap between the top leaf and the shackles.
I have put new shocks on but there is still quite a bumpy ride.
There is the correct number of leafs (6) not including the bottom plate. Having just helped my friend service his springs my attention wes drawn to mine and thus the discovery of the difference.

What doe the other end of the spring look like?
Dominic Clancy

I wonder if a previous owner fitted a "helper" spring for towing - I had them fitted on my MGB when I got it.

Chris at Octarine Services

It does look like another leaf could fit between the top leaf and the shackle.
Wouls it be advisable to insert something in the gap such as rubber pad or a metal wedge?
Thanks

Frank, This from my very original 1962 Mk.11 under restoration.
The clamps are packed tight! So I think yours may have been altered at some point. Certainly the one with the nut and bolt is iffy!

Frank
I wouldn't worry about it
The leaf with those clamps looks the same thickness as the others so not causing any ride issues
If the thru bolts aren't looking like poking into the sidewalls of the tyres they're fine, all they're there for is to stop the leaf twisting out side ways, there's no need to pack the gap, it will do nothing.
If you're really worried about it you could remove the bolt, hold a big hammer or a jack under the bottom of it and hammer them over, they're usually quite soft and bend easy

If the springs on your car are original MGA leaf springs, they should have the manufacturer's name and the part number stamped on them. Here's a picture of the information I found on my springs when I restored them. I agree that the clamps should be tight to the leaves.
