MG MGA - Screen braces

Are the retaining screws to the scuttle self tappers or with nuts?
Art Pearse

Hi Art

There should be a small bracket riveted to the lip of the body for the dashboard with two sliding captive nuts fore and aft for adjustment. The bracket is riveted to the lip before the dashboard is fitted. Mine disappeared when I had the body chemically treated for rust. The rivets were aluminium and of course attacked by the chemicals.

Somewhere I have a drawing of the bracket which I made if you need it.

Thanks John. I should go take a peek!

Barney, I was about to order the corner brackets and screws from Moss, but now not so sure, re your comments about the hood peg angles. Anyone used these parts from Moss lately?

Art Pearse

I found all the corner brackets I bought were dreadful and could not get Todd Clark's to fit properly. The angles were not quite right. I ended up re-plating my originals. John

I have 4 old top brackets, all in steel. I just need to extract a few stuck brass screws. The plating has gone, and the posts are all tilted so they are not quite parallel to each other when fitted. I'm tempted to re-use them. But the bottom brackets are toast. All the rubber round the glass has turned to powder! But I seem to have two spare side frame members.

In January 2002 I used the four corner brackets from Clarke Spares, and they fit well. Since then he changed form 2BA screws to #10-32-UNF threads for all windscreen parts, but the screw heads are the correct smaller 2BA style. Wherever you buy the hardware you should get it all from the same source, so you don't have one vendor blaming the other vendor if things don't mate properly.

The angles on the original brackets are not quite what you might expect. So the lack of parallelity might in fact be correct. I found it very difficult to get a perfect fit in the top corners of the screen. The bottom brackets are not an issue and new ones are fine. As Barney says the head size of the original screws are smaller than standard.

I got all my windscreen brackets from TC. One advantage of his parts is that everything is either brass or stainless steel. These parts are very prone to rusting and my original bits had rusted badly.

However, like John, I found that the top brackets were not quite right and to get them to fit I had to cut off a short bit off each of the verticals (including the third hole). Then I made replacement brass tapping bars from 3/8" x 3/16" brass (longer than original to include this third hole. At the time I felt that it was a pity the top brackets had not been supplied undrilled and it would have been less trouble.

TC's bottom brackets are made from barely more than 1/16" stainless which seemed a bit on the thin side (originals were 1/8") but they worked.......................Mike
