MG MGA - Seat Belt Mount

Please advise whether the Q.R. mounting plates iwo the sills are drilled to suit the captive nuts allowing the plate to sit flush on the sill, from Todd Clarke's drawing it would appear not, the factory instructions indicate the same as Todd's sketch plus the text tells one to drill two 8mm holes for each plate which is the diameter of the mounting bolts only and not the dia. of the captive nuts.

Thanks in advance, Trevor Burnett

I'm not sure I fully understand your question but I'm in the process of fixing the TC seat belt frame brackets and it is similar to a question I asked myself a few days ago.

Firstly these brackets are welded to the frame and not the sill. I believe they sit on top of the inner top of the frame with the circular captive nuts underneath resting on the frame. I was worried that the two hex fixing screws for the quick release bracket would tighten up against the frame and presumably this is why you thought that two holes should be drilled in the frame. In actual fact the two 5/8" screws do protrude a mm. or so from the captive nuts but I am going to shorten the screws by this amount so that they don't bottom on the frame.

In the workshop manual the two 8mm holes (7.73 mm)you mention are actually drilled through the top of the tonneau panel with a plate underneath to give the tonneau belt fixing point! I remember seeing an original roadster a couple of years ago where they had done this and the heads of four large chrome plated screws were on full view just to the rear of the cockpit.

I hope I've answered the right question!..................Mike

Sorry I forgot to add a picture showing the Todd Clarke frame bracket plus the quick release bracket in roughly the right position on the frame prior to welding.

You do not need to drill holes under the captive nuts. Make sure you move this bracket back 50 mm (2") from the dimension stated in the instructions otherwise the quick release bracket will hit the back of the seat.
http://www.mgaguru.com/mgtech/interior/int123.htm shows how close the seat back is even after moving the bracket back 50 mm

For the plates in the pics above, they mount on the frame, and no drilling of the sill is required.

The only drilling required for the whole kit is on the transmission rear tunnel piece.
