MG MGA - sidelamp question

Is there a way to remove the chrome ring around the sidelamp lens? The Service Parts Listing shows the ring and lens as an assembly.

Thanks!
George

Push in on the chrome ring/lens and turn counterclockwise, releasing the assembly from the base.
Nick Kopernik

Yes, but you will probably break the plastic lens in the process as it has locking tabs ho hold the chromed ring in place

I think Nick was explaining how to get the lens/chrome ring assembly off the base that is attached to the fender, and Dominic was addressing the issue I have. I want to use my original lens on a new sidelight assembly, my original chrome ring is very pitted. The repro sidelight is very nice, except that the lens does not have "Lucas" and the part number in it. I think from Dominic's post that the lens may crack if I try to remove the chrome ring, it must be a press fit.

why not cut the old ring off the original lens and break the new lens to get the new ring free?
Dominic Clancy

Dominic, I have considered that approach. I wish I knew how difficult it is to properly secure the chrome ring to the lens, I sure don't want to bugger up my original lens trying to do that. Guess I have a decision to make....

Hi George, why don't you try to press the lens out with a bench vice? Just place two pieces of wood on the jaws to prevent damage and also spread the pressure then wind in slowly to release the lens, it's a press fit. Try with the repro first incase the lens cracks & if it does then use Dominics method.

You could try warming the assembly gently - glass has a lower coefficient of expansion than brass.

I bought some Autosol and Simichrome polishes, the original chrome rings weren't as bad as they first looked, cleaned up nicely (though not perfect of course). And, they are original to the car so I think I will use them. Thanks for all your comments.
