MG MGA - Speaker grid removal

Hi All.
I would like to remove the chrome trim and speaker grill in the middle of the dash of my Coupe. I cant see how to get it apart.
Help needed or is this one of those jobs that should be done during total restoration. I want to put a 12 volt clock in the middle of the dash as i will never use that speaker.
Thanks for any ideas.

There are threaded studs on the back of the dash that hold the mesh and its backing to the dashboard. No idea how the chrome attaches, never had a car with one fitted. Happen to have a dash next to me so here's a photo

There are rivets that hold the stainless steel trim and two of them also capture the bottom of the speaker grille. You will have to drill them out using a 1/8" drill bit. I don't remember if there are rivets that hold the top of the speaker grille or some other type of fastener. I'll check some of my pictures.

There are rivets holding the top of the speaker grille to the dash. Here's a picture of my dash showing the top two rivets during my restoration.

You are most likely going to have to remove the crash rail and the piping that is attached to the top of the dash to access the top two rivets.

Here's a picture of the bottom. There is only one rivet that captures the bottom of the speaker grille.

You may be opening a big can of worms (as we say in the States) if you remove the chrome speaker grille. Here's a picture of mine removed and as you can see, the factory used two pieces of vinyl to cover the dash and the center of the dash underneath the speaker grille does not have vinyl.

Hi all. Thanks for your time and effort. Is the crash pad difficult to remove as those 2 pop rivets at the top seem to be the biggest problem. I do not need or want this to evolve in to a total strip down but once I have an idea it's difficult to get it out of my head. I do have 2 other projects demanding my attention as I have a Frogeye I am getting ready for a repaint.
Thanks. Simon

Why do you need to remove the chrome?
Can you not just remove the grill and replace it with a panel which has a hole for the clock?

Good point well made Dave. I will try to get my head up there and have a look.
Cheers. Simon

What Dave suggested is the simplest solution as long as your clock is small enough to fit.
