MG MGA - steering boots

Hi I looked through the archives and didn't find anything on this.
Anyone come up with a better replacement for the rubber steering boot or gaiter?
I'm about to rebuild my rack and think the standard ones are very fragile. I know they are easy to replace if you can get your *@#$# tie rods off.

If it's the type of rubber they're made from then you could try other suppliers or take a trip to the salvage yard and start measuring boots on other cars and see if you can find one that matches the inner and outer size. The boots shouldn't be too fragile and should install pretty easily if you use some type of lubrication on the rubber to ease it on the shaft and housing.

I went to our local "accessory shop" and found a number of rack boots suitable for MGA's. From memory I think I finished up using Ford Cortina ones (maybe not easy to find in the USA?). Not only are they cheaper than the specialist after-market items but the quality of factory replacements is generally far better!

I bought mine about 12 years ago from Brown & Gammons and they were very good. You might want to try them.

I recently replaced the boots (gaiters) on my 59 roadster with some from Scarborough Faire. I've also used them on my 58 coupe a coupe of years ago. I think they are a good item at a fair price. I just un-screwed the tie rod from the tie rod end to install them. Back off the nut slightly, then count how many turns to remove. Or, just measure the length of thread when un-screwed. Not that critical really. Installing the clamps is a bit of a pain. A word of warning. The inboard clamps from SF fit fine. The outboard (small) clamps won't fit. I just used some fuel line clamps. Just make sure your inboad clamps are installed before you slide the boots on. Getting the screws tight is a challenge, but can be done.
