MG MGA - Stiff to Move after long time stationary.

Any comments on following.......
After leaving the car for a month or longer and then starting and engaging gear I get a resistance and then a jerk before the car starts to move in reverse . It does not happen when used frequently.
The car seems to set itself down , enjoy the stationary life and not want to move.. AI in an mga!
I have worn axle splines but relatively new wire wheels and they seemed to have no play when I check .

Have you checked all four wheels spin freely? ..............Mike

Neil

Are the back brakes perhaps not releasing fully and bind very slightly during that first reverse? Do you for instance leave the parking brake on during the period? I never leave the handbrake on in my garage, just leave the car in gear.

Steve ....it feels like something is stuck and then unbinds .....will look into what you suggested..
Wheels all freely spin....

Neil, first question is have you got disc brakes fitted?Presumably you mean the car has been left outside but has it been raining ,or even damp for that length of time? It is not at all unusual for even a modern car with discs to experience a distinct clunk if the brakes and /or callipers have got what I call "top rust"( ie light non corrosive) on their surfaces which clunk especially when going straight into reverse. The problem goes away after just a few applications of brakes.Hope you get it sorted.

Car has front discs (1600) but is faithfully kept in a dry garage......but will check.
