MG MGA - Trim panel problem

I'm installing my FINAL trim panel. Its the LHS front one.
The RHS went in no problem. On the RHS I find that this channel, pictured, is pushing the panel proud by almost 1/4" so I cannot get it flush with the bodywork (next to where the door seal will go).
I'm thinking of cutting the bottom of this channel away. What purpose does it serve? It is not the channel for the W/S posts, that is outside and forward of this one.

It looks to me like the door hinge tapping plate is protruding to far into the car. I'm not sure what the round object to the right of the tapping plate is.

Both of these items will have an impact on the fitting of the trim panel.

John Bray

John, no that's an illusion. The tapping plate is not proud.
See another pic - the culprit is dead centre. Its the bottom of that U-channel. I don't know what function it has, and I'm ready to slash it back a bit if someone can confirm its OK.

Art Pearse

Art, Here is a picture from the same angle as yours showing where my trim panel ended up at the front. I used four fixing screws, three along the vertical front edge and you can just see the fourth close to the bonnet pull plate LH screw. If you put a straight edge from front to back you'll see how much to grind away. I guess the top hat section is welded at the top to the lateral section across the scuttle to give the body more strength. ...................Mike

OK, now where did I put the grinder?
Art Pearse

Why not take off the other side and make a quick double check before the grinding. It obviously was fine before......
Dominic Clancy

Too late!!I must confess some history. The car had suffered a RHS assault to the area of the A pillar and I had done some straightening with a jig that probably pushed on the corresponding area on the RHS and may have made that area recede.
But if that is the case, that this channel protrudes both sides, does Barney's template not include a cut-out for it?
