MG MGA - Turnbuckle fastener thread size

I'm about to install new turnbuckle fasteners on the cockpit rail just behind the seat. Any ideas on what size thread to use for the screws?
John Bray

RTP404 is the original part number, it seems this is replaced with AD606043, which is a no.6, 1/2" raised, countersunk, chrome, cross head, self tapping screw. Available from the usual suspects.

Thanks for the info Neil, looks like I don't need to tap a thread...JB

No, but you will need to be pretty careful to drill the right size holes (probably best to avoid the original oxidised ones by a few mm) and be careful not to overtighten.

Just checked with my technical adviser (Stan Bray) and the drill size should be 3mm (2.95 mm to be exact)
John Bray

Sounds about right, I normally hold the screw and drill bit up to the light and find a drill that is about the same size as the centre body of the screw.

Quick search shows that the overall diameter of a number 6 screw should be 3.5mm and the diameter of the centre body between 2.7mm and 3mm. That confirms Stan the man Bray's advice. Don't you just love the internet!
