MG MGA - Tyres (or tires) again

Who likes what tyres and why?

Hugh
I recently purchased New Wires and Tyres from SC parts in Croydon. The Tyres are Vredenstein Classic Sprint they look goood and seem to perform well.SC parts balanced them as well and I presume they have the correct cones.
I opted for 155x 15 but they do other sizes they are reasonably priced around £50-60 including balancing etc and delivery . The new wires are for tubeless tyres as well

Quite a bit in the archives over the last year. As Paul says, Vredenstein are quite popular. A number of us have opted for Firestone 165/R15 560s, but you may have to search around for them.

Neil Purves, contributor to this forum, works for Firestone and may well offer you the best advice.

Hi Hugh,

I beleive that both our own Firestone F560 as well as the Vredestein are good products. I have F560 (obviously) and am very happy with the performance as well as the classic appearance. We discontinued production at the end of last year so you may find them increasingly difficult to source.
The Vredesteins seem popular with those that have driven them so a good alternative. There are some cheap brands available but I would steer clear of these as the performance, especially on wet, is often very poor.

Best regards
Neil

Hugh, at Steve's recommendation I too fitted a set of F560's last December. As Neil says , they weren't easy to source as 2 garages said they couldn't get them after giving me a cheap quote. I eventually got a set but paid around £70 a tyre (incl fitting) - I also put new Michelin inner tubes on with my wire wheels- ( keeping the old inner tubes as spares in case of puncture).

I did not know you re-shod. No white wall stripes any more then!

Steve - yes the white walls have gone - sorry to see them go but they were nearly 20 years old and starting to slide on damp patches! Can now drive with a bit more confidence - they handle well so far.
