MG MGA - Uneven epoxy primer finish
I've started the prime coat on my 60 A Coupe and I can't seem to get an even smooth finish on my Du Pont epoxy primer. Im using a HVLP spray gun from Eastwood with a 1.5mm needle and 25-30psi at the gun. I have a 5hp compressor with a 60 gallon tank, so I have lots of air volume and pressure. The paint comes out like sprakle on a sheet rock wall, very uneven. I tried various air pressures and it seems to be a little smoother with a higher pressure. Does anyone have any advice, apart from take it to a professional. Thanks Andy

Andy, you might try the forums at www.autobody101.com. A wealth of info there. Don't give up. Marv Stuart

Andy, I have been using epoxy primer for many years and find it superb. It sounds as though you need more thinner. You could wet rub what you have done with a pad of 180 (or even 120) paper and go over it again with epoxy. I don't think that the heavy build will cause any problems. What I do is put a thin guide coat of contrasting colour over the epoxy (fairly thick, say 3 or 4 heavy wet double coats)and wet rub with 180, then another guide coat and wet rub with 400. I then apply lacquer primer/surfacer in the normal way and go on from there.

Andy, also make sure the air hole in the cap on top of the cup of your gun is clear (VERY IMPORTANT) it is real easy to tilt the gun and clog the air hole. This will result in just what you are describing. I would wet sand again. Use guide coat and pay close attention to the direction of the epoxy. If the epoxy is already on the just sand it out and shoot a sealer on it which will be thinner and flow better. You do not need to shoot epoxy as you last coat. Use sealer before your finish coats.

Sounds like WMR is correct. Also, when the air outlets in the fan spray are clogged, it just sputters. With that size nozzle, epoxy shouldn't need to be thinned or recommended over bare metal. Normally you don't or can't sand epoxy. The building primer should cover the clumps and block down with no problems.

Andy, The 1.5 tip is too small for epoxy. That's the size used for finish coats. Use a 1.7 0r 2.0 for Hi Viscosity undercoats.
