MG MGA - Unusual rear lights

Has anyone seen a rear light modification like this before? Perhaps it's an attempt to add indicator lights to a 1500 whilst keeping the original plinth.

Whatever it is it looks well done with nice circular chrome finishers.

The car is currently for sale on Ebay but there is no mention of this feature.

The front lights are normal so maybe it's an extra brake light?...................Mike

Those are after-market add ons that were popular in the 50-60's. It's a blue dot that makes your tail lights glow purple-ish when lit.

They must be a USA type thing back from the hot rod days. You just drill out the OEM lens and insert the "blue dot". These are illegal modifications in most states. Some states are just beginning to allow them on specially registered Street Rods, Custom Vehicles, and Antique Vehicles but not acceptable for regular daily drivers.

Due to the lazy nature of today's public, you can now buy many different styles of taillights with the Blue-dots pre-installed.

Twin tail pipes?

Does it have a V4/V5/V6/ or V8 under the bonnet? :-)

Or just a Straight 4 with a twin tail-pipe box? ;-(

Every hot rod in California seems to have these things. I never understood the appeal.

I like the blue dots on modern cars but there is something so very wrong about it on an MGA.
Larry Wheeler

Very interesting. I suppose the reason they didn't make it over here is because the hot rod craze never really took off in the UK.

Was there any advertising blurb with them suggesting they may be easier to see due to the blue light penetrating darkness/fog better?

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be allowed here - the police seem to have a monopoly on blue lights on cars especially if they're flashing!

However, they might look good on an iris blue car.............................Mike
