MG MGA - Value of steel wheels?

Anyone have a good idea what steel wheels (1500 and 1600) are worth that have been sandblasted and painted? Thanks and have a good day!

John,

In addition to surface preparation and paint, the underlying condition of the MGA disc (steel) wheels will significantly influence their value upon restoration. Among the important characteristics of the wheels are: straightness (parallelism of edges), degree of wobble (run out), degree of denting and dings, degree of pitting, condition of bead surfaces, condition of valve seat surface, condition of hub cap studs, as well as surface preparation, prime coat, and paint.

The cost for restoring a wheel can add up quickly. The expenses to consider are:

- Used Wheel (condition?)
- Wheel Assessment
- Dent and Ding Removal
- Wobble Removal (if not severe)
- Media Blasting
- Priming
- Paint and Coat (if applicable)
- S&H (possibly several times)

Note, Scarborough Faire offers reconditioned wheels; however, I don't know what their reconditioning entails. In their price list of June 1, 2007, both 1500 and 1600 disc wheels are listed at $110.

So, depending upon what you ask for and get, I'd say expect somewhere between $125 and $175, or more, for a restored disc wheel. Clearly that puts the value of a restored steel wheel in the same range as a contemporary alloy wheel. Therefore, one should consider if originality or performance is preferred.

Hmmmn, I guess that $65 for a pair of nice original wheels I passed on yesterday at a swap meet was a good buy......?

My wheels were in bad shape. I had seven wheels. I sent them all to the blaster and he Blasted, Primed and Painted all wheels. Out of the seven, I got 4 good ones and one that would suit for a spare. I found that the lug holes were very worn out of round on a couple of them!

George, I assume your were in Wheaton yeasterday. I missed seeing you. I go virtually every year. It is good to get reinvigorated in February. I thought that the offering for MGA's is getting slimmer and slimmer as time goes by. I think that many have moved on to eBay. There were some good buys. A rebuilt "A" tranny for 250 and several used ones for 50. If you find a good laygear. it is with the admission.

Hi Chuck. Yes, I was at Wheaton, sorry I missed you. I was thinking the same thing, the selection of parts for all British marques seemed to be less than previous years. I do enjoy going, its a good time to connect with people you haven't seen for awhile. E-bay doesn't allow for the social aspect of seeking parts, that's a shame...

Hi Gentlemen,
If the $65 wheels were the ones that the vendor, who was in one of the conners ,in the second building was selling he bought them from me while we were setting up for $30 for the pair. I also had a good laygear for sale and the only offer I had was for $5. Still I was able to sell most of my stuff but as usual I ended up buying more much needed items for our MG's. A great event as usual.

Tony, was that a Freudian slip? (...who was in one of the conners)

If he was in the far right hand corner of the 2nd building, I know of him. I bought an unfinished Locost project 2 years ago from him. He buys and resells whatever he can.

FYI, the Locost is still unfinished but now sports an IRS.

Chuck,
I glad he bought them(I didn't have to take them home again). I was selling them there two years ago and was asking $20 a piece and $30 for the pair and never got an offer. The event is a great place to run into old friends.Next year we plan on coming back as buyers.

There is a set of 4, complete with tyres for £10 ($20) on UK Ebay at the moment. They will of course require refurbishing, but they seem in decent nick. 4 hours left to run and nobody is bidding so the price probably reflects demand over here.
