MG MGA - Viton seals in Carbs

Hi all,
Some weeks ago, someone in the UK spec'd these seals and listed a UK supplier. I'm about to refurb my carbs and whilst i have the kit from Burlen, i don't want to fit the cork seals. Can anyone help here?

Thanks,
Colin

Colin,
The VITON seals available in North America are, to my knowledge, only the ones for the mounting of the float bowl to the carburetor body. (These were never made of cork.) If these are the ones you are referring to, they are available from Scarborough Faire in Rhode Island.

A-while back Barney recommended using 8 off PTFE O-rings (yes 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom of each jet)instead of the 4 cork jet seals. He has used these for many years with success on 10% ethanol fuels. The equivalent O-ring size here in the UK is BS.010. PTFE is pretty rigid stuff which obviously works here but viton being a rubber will be elastic and not prone to damage, it will certainly be resistant to ethanol. I'm certain the same BS.010 size should work fine. Try your local seal suppliers for a best price - watch out for those minimum order charges...

I was in Maplin a couple of weeks ago. They had a box of a hundred or so 'O' rings. Can't be sure of the spec but might be worth checking out.

Hi Steve - Assorted O-rings like that will be all sizes and usually nitrile or natural rubber, useless for ethanol. Chemically, viton is nearly as good as PTFE and is a rubber. Viton is one of the more expensive elastomers, but as these are very small there isn't a lot of viton involved.

You want Viton for the carb to float bowl junction.

Cork for the large gland nut at the bottom of the carb is OK - works great and as original.

Teflon o-rings for the carb jet (two on top and two on bottom on each carb) instead of the cork is the way to go. Also be sure to polish your jet until it's bright and shiny and smooth before reinstalling.

Good luck.

Hi , What o -rings did you specify from radio spares, as I want to order some. Are these rubber, PTFE or vitron

kind regards

Hi DJJ, The P/No is 129-022 (viton). Stonking price though!

That stonking price is for a bag of fifty, not for each O ring!

I think they only sell them in bags of 50, I've just replaced mine tonight, with standard cork seals.I've tried centering the jet as per the manual, seems a bit hit and miss though, might be worth buying the centering kit.

ps how do you know when the bottom half of the jet bearing is tight with the copper washer and not just pressing against the large cork seal. How tight should it be as I don't want to over tighten.

It is a big thread, so you can make it pretty tight without damaging anything. The cork washer will crush a lot fairly easily to accommodate a host of piece part tolerances. When finished most of the cork washer will be hidden with only a thin edge showing at the side. The jet bearing parts need to be in tight metal to metal contact at the ends so they cannot move. Just keep wrenching until you feel a very definite increase in torque. It should be very obvious when the assembly goes solid.

I contacted McMaster-Carr in the Usa to try and buy some viton seals for my carbs. This is the firm that Barney recommends for buying the seals. They emailed me back saying that they don't ship to Malta. Any help from anyone please.

Interesting. I have been so pleased with performance of the Teflon O-rings that I never looked to see that they are also available in Viton (and cheaper too). I can recommend the Teflon parts, as I have long term service experience with this material. I have no experience with Viton in this application. The material is chemical resistance to modern gasoline, but I have no information on expected service life or the friction characteristics of the material (if the jets might stick).

Frank, -- click on my email address to send me a private message, and we can chat about procurement if you are still interested.

Frank. I have a lot of these in my drawer still I think. I could try sending to you. Email me your address.

I have two rebuilt sets of carbs (with Teflon Orings) if anyone needs them!

Hi Barney,

when I contacted McMaster-Carr I asked for teflon o'rings not viton. I got mixed up with viton tipped needles & seats. As you can see from the last post from AJ Mail, he said he will send me the teflon o'rings for both my carbs. I've already contacted him and gave him my home address.
I have absolutely no difficulty in having a chat with you re these o'rings, but I don't want to waste any of your time. Please comment.
