MG MGA - Windscreen pump assembly

Just replaced my dented metal dash with one that has been properly painted to match my car color. Glacier blue 1958 1500 roadster.

After installation, I realized that there is no hole in the replacement dash for the windscreen washer pump assembly. I looked at my old dash, and it appears that the hole for the pump assembly was crudely drilled out by the PO

What is the story with the washer pump assembly hole, was it typically punched out at the factory, or was this left up to the owner?

Thanks,
Fran

My heritage certificate says mine left the factory with the pump and I remember the hole being crude too.Must hsve been drilled on the factory floor.

I asked the same question in another thread. I wondered at what point in the assembly this option was fitted. It was also most likely installed at the dealers when required.

I wonder if it was done when the dash was assembled.Since it's on my certificate it had to be done at the factory.Mine is a early 1600 Coupe, built on June 1&2 1959

Somewhere I have a book with alot of pictures of Mike Ellman-Browns TC being built. The one picture I can find shows the dash being assembled on the "top deck" of the factory. It already has the vinyl on the face, with no screen washer.I'll try and find the other book and see what the dash looks like when it was finished.

Thanks guys -

I will attempt to drill out the opening for the washer pump knob. It will be a bit precarious indeed with a fresh paint job. I will use masking tape and drill through with a carbide metal hole saw in an effort not to chip the surrounding paint.

I measure the diameter of the opening on the old dash at approximately 15/16". Does anyone know if this is accurate?

Frank, I already had a hole and just filed mine out to suit with a round file.

Most important make sure the position is correct.

I believe that it should be symmetrical with choke, keyswitch and wiper switch, but I notice that some cars have lower and more left (some a long way lower and left).

I would be interested to see a factory/dealer installation instruction (drawing)! There is such an instruction that was supplied by Radiomobile for the radio installation that includes the hole position for the aerial on the wing.

Fran,
You can make a neat hole in sheet metal with a chassis punch, the sort used to punch holes in electronics assemblies for vacuum tube sockets and the like. I bought mine for cheap at Harbor Freight < http://www.harborfreight.com/knockout-punch-kit-91201.html > as a kit, but much better quality is made by Greenlee.

I've found that a panel hole cutter works well. Never slips or chips paint. This is a stepped hole drill, with each of the step diameters marked on the tool. About $35-$45 from a local hardware or automotor store.
