MG MGA - Windshield alignment

Hi everyone!

I fitted my windshield back in 2002 and have always had an issue with the alignment!

Please can someone give me a dimension from the joint where the rear wing meets the body at the door opening and the top side screw of the windshield?

Ian Pearl

Hi Ian,
I have a 1959 1500 which measures 73.5cm and 1959 1600 that measures 74.00cm,both have hoods and side screens made by Bob Wests trimmer and fitment is perfect.

Windscreen has a fair amount of positional tolerance. Install the side screens first, then align the windscreen to front edge of the side screens before securing it in place. When windscreen and doors have suitable alignment, then install the rag top.

Each car will be a bit different. Do not use someone else's car measurement to set the position of your windscreen.

Thanks guys. I have 2 sets of side screens and both fit slightly differently. Neither set line up on the left, so I knew something was out! With the hard top on, it is more obvious as the top sits further back on the right. It is the first time I have used the hard top since I re-built it!! The weather is so cold here in UK, I have needed it for daily driving.

One problem is that the car came with replica grab handles and I have read that they can be horrible little things. I am maxed out on the right side. I read your article on the grab handles, Barney (I have read MANY of your articles!) and realised the differences.

I shall have a play later today and see how things turn out.

Cheers,

Ian

Original grab handles had two slots, no center hole. After the windscreen was properly aligned, the center hols was drilled and screw installed. Then you have grab handles that are unique and custom fit to your car.

If you get replacement grab handles with the center hole previously drilled, then you may have to leave out the center screw to achieve proper alignment.

Barney knows EVERYTHING.

Thanks Barney. I was mistaken - I thought they were replicas, but the middle hole has been drilled - not a slot like the newer versions.
