MG MGA - Windshield Washer Pump

The windshield washer pump on my 1600 doesn’t work. It appears to be the original pump. I am able to push the lever in and out but nothing comes out of the washer nozzles. The bottle under the hood has washer fluid in it. Taking the hose off the bottle, and trying it I felt no suction.

Does anyone know of a rebuilding service? Or where they can be repaired?

If the foot valve at the bottom of the suction pipe inside the bottle has failed the pump will not prime and will not pump.

Moss sell the foot valve for pennies, or you could get one at your local aquarium shop.

The reciprocating pump needs two check valves. The first one is the foot valve in bottom of the reservoir. The second one is inside the pump. The pump is supposed to be non-serviceable. You have to pry the rear flange back to disassemble it. Being able to repair it and reassemble it is kind of iffy.

A replacement pump is not too expensive. I bought one a while back (as well as a new foot valve), but am still mixed about effectiveness of the check valves.

In a pinch you can install aquarium check valves on the back of the pump, which seem to work well (as long as you an keep all the hose connections attached).

You could always install an electric pump. I used the fog lamp switch.

My 1500 Coupe has its original pump and nozzles. The check valves are in the nozzles. See here on Barney’s site - http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/accessories/at105a2.htm

It is really easy to fix this without taking the pump apart. you just cut the hoses and insert one of these before and after the pump, noting the arrow that shows the direction of flow.

won't even cost you a whole dollar for two

There isn't any need to unmount the pump. Hide one in the bottle and the other under the dashboard. Maybe replace the tubing at the same time if it is hard and not likely to grip the valves properly, may cost you another two dollars.....
