MG MGA - Wing piping

I commented a while ago on the rubbish that I had received from Moss instead of the correct wing piping.

Prior to sending the rubbish back for a refund, I have cut a 2mm sliver from one end of the roll, and taken a photo of it next to the correct stuff which got from Bob West (which he aso supplies to Brown and Gammons)

Photo is attached - the real McCoy is the larger section. As is clear in the picture, the Moss variety is nothing like the correct version (which is symetrical, it's just a bit from one side in thepicture)

It's an easy win for Bob West!

Good Grief Dominic - how can they be so different and Moss have the cheek to sell it as the correct stuff - thanks for so graphically pointing it out to us - hope someone from Moss gets their finger out and does something about it before some of our colleagues not on this BBS buy the wrong one. cheers Cam

That photo is odd to me. I bought new wing piping from Moss USA at end of April, and it appears to be the correct stuff, silver color, full height and ribbed both sides. It looks exactly like the latter silver piece in your photo. It is tall enough to be exposed inside the rear wings where the bolt flange is convoluted (narrower in between the bolts). While I was painting bolt heads and washers after fender installation I was also painting the bottom edge of the piping web inside the rear wings. It all looks okay to me before and after installation. It is the same stuff that Moss USA supplied ten years earlier. Perhaps Moss UK is selling something different.

If I recall correctly, the absolute origional type of fender piping was a vynil type covering over a cloth type round insert. Am I right or wrong.
Gordon Harrison

Gordon, that type was used for early MGs, but for the MGA it was always the type on the left.

According to Bob, he has it made by thr original manufacturer who made it for MG, so it is correct.

Barney, Moss used to sell the one on the left, and for some reason have switched to the ne on the right. It is nothing like the original, it's much thinner, and the top profile is slightly smaller.

Cam, as Bob had 20km of the stuff made (Minimum Order Quantity) there's plenty for the other suppliers to be able to buy from him.

This is what I got from Moss a couple of years ago. I never questioned it.

R J Brown

That's the same stuff I bought from Moss a couple months ago, same as 10 years ago and same as 22 years ago. It works okay for me.

Me too. ( Good Grief!!)

I suspect that exposure to direct sunlight causes a change to the piping material. I find the need to repeatedly clean a layer of brownish gum from the surface every few months or so. To me it's the biggest PITA of MGA ownership. Nothing really dissolves it without major rubbing. I mask the surrounding paint to prevent damage I've owned three over 40 years and they all had the problem. Sure wish someone would formulate a replacement that wouldn't do this!
D Sjostrom

So do you think the orangy-brownish gum is dirt / environmental grime, or is it the surface layer of the piping material that has broken down from exposure to ultra-violet sunlight?
Andy Bounsall

I am sure it is the surface layer of plastic on mine that breaks down allowing it to combine with environmental grime.

D Sjostrom,

See my earlier post. Goof Off does a fantastic job of cleaning the piping.

Good luck.
T McCarthy

I agree that Goof Off works the best. I find that taping off both sides of the piping allows me to soak a piece of Scotch Brite pad with Goof Off and go at it. I came to the "sun" conclusion because the areas of the piping that are more vertically oriented don't gum up anywhere near the extent that areas with full sun exposure do.
